All that jazz

Lawrence Durrell regarded "Death of a Hero" as the best war-novel of the epoch. Its author, Richard Aldington was at the time a reknowed translator of Balzac, Boccaccio, and Apuelius; a close friend of Eliot, Pound and Mead; and the husband to imagist poet H.D. He has unfortunately not been given his due in present times, but if you enjoy Wyndham Lewis and Evelyn Waugh Aldington will be a thoroughly stisfying experience. The novel here reviewed was published in 1929 and described by critics as a memorial to a generation presented in a rhythmic prose that many have glamorized as jazzy, although, in all sincerity it has none of the jive, but enough stilted trills to warrent the title. Spurred by Voltarian irony and DH Lawrence-like candor the story follows the hero, George Winterbourne, as he resolves to leave the Edwardian gloom of his embattled parents behind him and escape to Soho, which on the eve of the war buzzes with talk of politics, pacifism and free love. He paints, he marries, he takes a mistress: the perfect hero of his time...whose destiny is the bloody nightmare of the trenches... - Brideshead Rivisted has overlapping themes, but the two styles could not be more different.
Aldington's fugue is a chronicle of this doomed favorite of the gods: a searing testament to the corrosive waste of human warfare, the agenda of politics and the hopes of the hopeless. This is as stark and unadulterated an attack on British hypocrisy and affectation as you'll ever find - ferocious, unsparing and passionate. But the satire of the author is more blunt than Waugh's for example and more philsophical rather than social, thus making this a kind of elitist read at present, but one that is rewarding nonetheless.

About the Author

Floyd E. Toole studied electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick and at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London where he received a Ph.D. In 1965 he joined the National Research Council of Canada where he reached the position of Senior Research Officer in the Acoustics and Signal Processing Group. In 1991 he joined Harman International Industries Inc. as Corporate Vice President – Acoustical Engineering. In this position he worked with all Harman International companies and directed the Harman Research and Development Group, a central resource for technology development and subjective measurements, retiring in 2007. He is currently a consultant to Harman.

Dr. Toole’s research has focused on the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction in small rooms, directed to improving engineering measurements, objectives for loudspeaker design and evaluation, and techniques for reducing variability at the loudspeaker / room / listener interface. For papers on these subjects he has received two AES Publications Awards and, for service to the society, the Board of Governors Award. For his achievements he has been recognized with both the AES Silver Medal (1996) and Gold Medal (2013) Awards. He is a Fellow and Past President of the AES, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a Fellow of CEDIA (Custom Design and Installarion Association). He has been awarded Lifetime Achievement awards by CEDIA and ALMA (Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics International). He has recently written a book: "Sound Reproduction: the acoustics and psychoacoustics of loudspeakers and rooms." (Focal Press, 2008).

A long overdue summary

In this book Floyd Toole summarizes and explains conclusions from a lifelong involvement with audio. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in factual information about loudspeakers and listening rooms, about measurements, listening observations and their practical implications. It is lucidly written in easy to understand language, extensively illustrated and referenced. It deals with the reproduction of sound - which existed in a space - inside another space. My only regret is that the potential of 2-channel playback in doing so has not been fully explored. This is understandable because the conventional box loudspeaker with its frequency dependent directivity index has been used for almost all of the observations that are discussed. In fact, the particular interaction of a box loudspeaker with the listening room makes it more difficult for our ear/brain perceptual apparatus to hear the recording venue's space and acoustics, provided that such information has been captured in the recording process. Floyd focuses on multiple loudspeaker surround sound. He considers this approach to spatial sound reproduction as much more rewarding and he provides extensive practical information for that. The book is very comprehensive and in my opinion a "must-read" for loudspeaker designers, recording and mastering engineers, room-acoustic consultants, audio reviewers and audiophiles. The book is about theory and praxis. It debunks much of the BS that seems to have permeated the audio industry and many of its customers.

A must have book...

Dr. Toole, with whom I worked at Harman for years, showed me this book in person at CEDIA last week, and I was quite impressed. I have not read the book in detail yet, but I have been recommending it to everyone I work with at Triad Speakers. Floyd is a wealth of practical and technical knowledge, and he communicates well to academics as well as hobbyists. My Book Review of The Artist's Granddaughter

This story begins with Megan Roberts bidding on her grandfather's painting. She made a promise to her dying father that she would do what she could to find it and keep it in the family. She never expected her first love to outbid her and take possession of the painting. Michael Kirk, back in town--she couldn't believe it, especially how he left so many years ago and broke her heart. Megan wondered why he wanted the painting and she soon finds out his boss asked him to get it for his collection of art.

Ms. Bayne sets this story up perfectly and you are hooked right away. You wonder if Megan and Michael will patch up the past and move in to the present with a future together or continue living with broken hearts. This novella is short but sweet and so deliciously full of detail and complex character development. Without even realizing it you are swept into their sweet love story and root for them every step, willing these two delightful characters to find their way back to each other.

The attention to detail and the way the secondary characters are developed, leave you feeling satisfied with your experience in the small town setting. By the end of this novella, I found myself wanting to read more about Megan and Michael to see how their lives played out. I only met them for a short time, but they felt like good friends that I've known for ages. I've never read any of Ms. Bayne's books before, but she is now definitely one of the authors on my favorites list.

A Good, Heartwarming Read

This book was a charming, light-hearted read about unrequited high school love. Megan has to obtain her grandfather's last painting in order to keep it in the family, plus, it was her father's dying wish for her to do so. However, her high-school boyfriend, Michael, stunningly appears at the auction, outbidding her. Megan has never gotten over Michael whom she dated when she was fifteen. He left, abandoned her, and has made no contact with her since he went away to college and law school, pursuing a law career afterwards. Megan doesn't know if she believes Michael's reasons for abandoning her and never attempting to make contact with her over the years - she's never left the town, so she would have been easy to find.

Meanwhile, Megan's made a name for herself in the community as a gemologist. She designs jewelry for her clients and enjoys her job immensely.

Their love is re-kindled, in spite of their disagreement about what should be done with her grandfather's last painting. Michael has some hard lessons to learn about his career, and knows he's made a mistake in abandoning his beloved Megan all those years ago. Michael's reappearance causes a bit of disharmony within the small town of Carrolton, especially since he was a bad boy in high school, and his name is linked to a well-known theft. Was he the person who stole Megan's grandfather's murals several years ago?

This book was a quick, enjoyable read set in a small town. The characters faced obstacles in which most people could relate, and the writing will draw you in, making you appreciate the feelings that these two lovebirds share for one another. You should give this book a try and it's available on Amazon's Kindle.

Another great romance from Robin Bayne

Megan and Michael's story is designed to touch the reader's heart. From the opening chapter The Artist's Granddaughter unfolds pulling you deeper as secrets are unraveled and lies put to rest.

I thought Ms. Bayne would have a hard time topping her last romance Prodical, I was wrong, With The Artist Grandaughter, painting with words, Ms. Bayne created a work of art sure to satisfy the romantic in everyone.
