An honest review

I bought this book because of the glowing reviews. It took me all of an hour to read it from beginning to end and I was a bit disappointed in the content. Upon going back to look at the reviewers' histories I noticed something rather disturbing to me... One in particular posted 19 books reviews today, 17 yesterday, so on and so forth. Sadly enough, a majority of the reviewers for this book are like that.
My opinion is that this is nowhere near a 5-star book. Poor editing, (improper tenses, sentences routinely missing prepositions, articles, conjunctions etc.,) alone negate a 5-star rating.
In my opinion this is a very basic introduction into lucid dreaming. Only two methods of induction are covered: MILD and WILD, neither of which are advanced techniques. I didn't hate the book, all the information was useful and correct, from what I know about the subject. There just isn't enough of it and it isn't written well. This is basically a beginner's guide without discussing reality checks and dream signs.

I've had an interest in lucid dreams for a while. Controlling dreams has been a hot topic of study for a long time and probably always will! This book added to my knowledge about it in simple, intriguing terms. I like to read this in the morning while a dream is still fresh! I'd like to thank the author for an educational and educating read.

A fine book (glad it was updated)

So I went ahead and read the first Book in the trilogy with much enjoyment. However, I held off of purchasing this the second book as many of the reviews noted large amount of typos and errors in the book.

Then I hopped onto the author's blog and noticed several posts about revisions to his books already on Amazon's, urging readers to re-download them.

Effectively, he's patched his books, fixing the rougher portions and problems. Being a self-starter, I can understand the reasoning. Now looking forward to the book, I purchased it at the first opportunity.

It didn't disappoint. While I enjoyed the first a bit more (which I believe has as much to with my almost never enjoying the middle of a trilogy as much as the beginning or the end) I still had a good time and did enjoy some of the methods the author used to play the reader into his hands. I won't give away much of the plot, aside from the warning that the author does manage to break a few tropes, even if he falls into a few other tried and true ones. Let's just say if your thought you knew what was going on at the end of the first book, be prepared for some eye openers, as well as some more knowledge about how the world is working.

I enjoyed the second book quite a bit, and am looking forward to the third title (when I pick it up).

A bit of a let down after the first book.

One and a half stars. I rounded the review upwards to two stars as Amazon does not allow half ratings. The only thing that will cause me to finish this trilogy is the low cost and my curiosity regarding how the series will end.

My reasons for one and a half overall stars:

EDITING!!! This fact alone caused me to reduce the book from five to three and a half stars. If I thought the editing was poorly done on the first book, the second in the series reads almost as if it were a rough draft. As you read through the first half of the book you will notice numerous grammatical and spelling errors, erroneous usage of homonyms and the clunky use of language that was present in the first book, but the second half of this book is even worse. About mid-way through the book I noticed these errors were becoming more common, and even at some points additional errors were creeping in, such as misattribution of dialogue (in one case "Ether" is essentially talking to herself). Towards the end of the book there are even sentences that contained words and phrases that did not even belong in the sentence, much as if the author was writing one thing, changed his mind and deleted a portion of the original text but not all. This seriously compromises the flow of the novel and removes the reader from any semblance of immersion in the story. Loss of one and a half stars simply for poor editing.

Poor detailing of action. Without giving too many spoilers, in one action sequence the protagonists are battling a created version of the dragon as well as one of the antagonist generals. These "dragoyles", which number at least fifty, are constantly "focusing" on the antagonists but never seem to come within striking distance. For example Myranda has at least a half dozen attacking her personally (what is left after her dragon Myn has distracted some of the attackers) yet these monstrous attackers, two of which earlier in the series had almost proved the destruction of Myranda, Desmeres and Lain, are the Laurel and Hardy equivalent of the bad guy in this action sequence. And this is just one instance of this poor detailing of action. While fantasy is meant to be a form of escapism it also has its own self-imposed rules. In the above example, the author violated his own self-imposed rules regarding the power of a created being used by the antagonists. And this is represented throughout this second novel. Loss of an additional two stars.

So, was this read worth the $2.99 charged at Amazon? That depends. If the reader is a pre-teen or young teen, perhaps. An adult? No. This book needed far more revision and polishing of both dialogue and action sequences by the author, outside of the necessary editing work. I will be reading the final book in this series, but only because at this point the cost is worth seeing how the author decides to complete the series. If the first book had been as poor of a read as this one I would not have purchased this second in the series.

Disappointed.

I enjoyed the first book, so I had high hopes for the following books. This book was such a disappointment that I don't know if I can force myself to read the third book.
*****Spoiler Alert*****
Killing off Myn (the baby dragon) pretty much did it for me. I completely lost interest at that point. Before, when the dragon suffered fatal injuries, Myranda was willing to sacrifice her life to save Myn's. When Myn dies in book 2, Myranda's reaction was nothing like it had been in book 1. I didn't feel her suffering... She just moved on. Let's go on to Ivy's character. She comes across as completely pathetic. Once she was introduced, and Myn was killed, Ether almost had me convinced that yes, these characters were useless and should be wiped out. I found myself wishing everyone in the book would just be incinerated somehow, so it would all come to an end. Yes, there were grammatical issues in books 1 and 2, but I can look past that as long as the story still draws me in. Book 2 felt different, and Myranda was left out of the story too much. Also, please make chapters and a table of contents. When I read a book without chapters, it makes me wonder what your outline looked like.

McMichael offers an important counterpart to the standard narrative of the system of British slavery that began in the upper South before heading South and West. Instead, we learn about a more complex and dynamic process through which enslavement and freedom, plantation agriculture and frontier settlement, regional connections and international tensions overlapped to shape life in North America.

how the Florida panhandle became a part of the new United States

McMichael's "Atlantic Loyalties" makes a good study of how a region became part of the United States differently from how practically all of the rest of the U. S. was formed. The jingoistic settlement of Texas preceding the Mexican War; displacement of Native American tribes; and administrative steps leading to statehood as with California and other Western states are familiar ways regions have been incorporated into the United States. By contrast, the Florida panhandle controlled by Spain became a part of the nation by a long, winding course by which the Anglo-Americas who made up the majority of the population changed loyalties.

Part of the Spanish territory of western Florida almost from the earliest days of its settlement, Anglo-Americans were not essentially dissatisfied with being subject to Spanish rule. The Anglo-Americans were economically successful; they made a community within the territory; the Spanish rule was benign, with some of the governors, notably Charles Louis Boucher de Grand Pre, popular. Neither victory in America's War of Independence nor the Louisiana Purchase turned the west Floridian Anglo-Americans' allegiance from the Spanish to the Americans. However, each of these momentous historical events inevitably contributed to the eventual change in loyalties.

Continuing United States' troubles with Britain leading to the War of 1812 and conflict among the European countries of Britain, Spain, and France with the rise of Napoleon having some global dimension also unsettled the circumstances in west Florida so as to contribute to the change. Outside American agitators trying to bring the area into the United States; Spanish land speculators; and developments in the Caribbean region were localized factors which along with the larger historical events, made the change of loyalty virtually inevitable. It was only a matter of time.

What is remarkable is not that the loyalties of the Anglo-Americans shifted, but that they took so long to do so; that it took such a buildup of historical and local events for them to do so. After victory in the Revolutionary War and the Louisiana Purchase, for example, Americans rowdily and sometimes violently took over some locales.

McMichael, associate professor of history at Western Kentucky University, does not attribute the change in allegiance from Spain to the United States to any single cause; neither to any confluence of a few. He shows how the effects of historical developments and the practicalities and feelings of human lives intermingle in certain veins of history.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dr. Johanna BUDWIG, born in 1906, made her mark in the male-dominated world of science as one of the first researchers to conclusively link the role of essential fats to disease prevention and cure.

Studies in pharmacy, chemistry and medicine earned her a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in physics -and during the 1940's and 50's, she furthered research to detect, isolate and identify fatty substances in human blood.

Dr. Budwig compared the blood analysis of thousands of healthy individuals to those with degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes and liver disease. The results were revolutionary.

Dr. Budwigs's test results conclusively showed that the diseased patients were deficient in specific nutritional factors, particularly the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid. These patients were also lacking adequate levels of phosphatide and lipoprotein necessary for good health.

She concluded that sulfur-based proteins, essential fatty acids and phosphatide are absolutely critical to building and maintaining healthy cells.

Dr. Budwig lived well into her ninety's and her tireless dedication and research in the field of nutrition precipitated her nomination for the Nobel Prize seven times over the course of her long and illustrious scientific career.

Memory Improved !

I took Cottage and ground flax mixed together for 2 weeks and have noticed a very marked improvement in short term memory. Before, I couldnt remember things for more than a couple of seconds and I was always at a loss for words. BOOM, after the diet, I now have NO PROBLEM recalling things and words in conversation. Going to try adding Cinammon, Almond splinters, Honey and prunes to the mix.

This is a miracle mix !!!!!

Great Book

I am a health nut and highly recommend Dr Budwig's book on Arthritis, Cancer, etc before obtaining this cookbook. This cookbook is wonderful and I have been following the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil with many other vegetables and fruits. I cut up all my vegetables and keep in a

vacuum seal container ahead of time. This enables me to throw meals, lunches together in no time at all. I am looking forward to trying out her ice cream recipe with the cottage cheese.

I truly believe that the Flax Seed oil is a Fountain of Youth. I am 57 years old and have been using for just a month. My crow's feet between my brows is almost invisible as well as around the corners of my mouth.

I highly recommend the cookbook for anyone wanting to change their diet.

It's a giant secret here but everyone is dying from lack of Omega 3's. We're talking cancer, heart disease,
plus all those maladies that just make your life barely livable such as painful arthritis. The author of this
book was nominated for the Nobel Prize no less than seven times. It was never awarded to her thanks to
drug companies and research labs. Why fix something when you can keep it broken and profit ?!! This book
is a goldmine for those of us who want to keep feeling good instead of slowly deteriorating into useless beings
who cannot care for themselves or anything else...

About the Author
Dennis Sherman is Professor of History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the City University of New York. He received his B.A. (1962) and J.D. (1965) degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. (1970) from the University of Michigan . . He was Visiting Professor at the University of Paris (1978-79; 1985). He has received the Ford Foundation Prize Fellowship, the Council for Research on Economic History fellowship, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His publications include A Short History of Western Civilization, 8th edition (co-author); Western Civilization: Sources, Images, and Interpretations, 5th edition; World Civilizations: Sources, Images, and Interpretations, 2nd Edition (co-author); a series of introductions in the Garland Library of War and Peace; several articles and reviews on nineteenth-century French economic and social history in American and European journals, and short stories on literary reviews.

Joyce Salisbury is Professor Emerita of History at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she taught history of undergraduates for more than twenty years. She received a Ph.D in medieval history from Rutgers University in New Jersey. She is a respected historian who has published many articles and has written or edited more than ten books, including the critically acclaimed Perpetua's Passion: Death and Memory of a Young Roman Woman, The Blood of Martyrs: Unintended Consequences of Ancient Violence, The Encyclopedia of Women in the Ancient World, and the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life, which won many awards for its creative organization and timely presentation of the material. In 2010, Salisbury published a second edition of her classic work on the history of attitudes towards animals: The Beast Within: Humans and Animals in the Middle Ages. Salisbury is an award-winning teacher, who was named "Professor of the Year for Wisconsin in 1991" by CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education), a prestigious national organization. Since retiring from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Salisbury has taught twice on Semester at Sea, a program sponsored by the University of Virginia that teaches students as they circumnavigate the world. Salisbury brought a global perspective to the history of Western Civilization while teaching abroad, and the fourth edition of The West in the World has benefitted from her interaction with students as they make sense of our twenty-first century global civilization.

The bible arrived promptly and is very nice. The leather cover has a rich feel and look. Mom can only read large type print and was thrilled to now have a bible she could read and bring to Sunday services. There are also several pages of holy land maps in the bible too.
