Controlling your Ego

I really have become a fan of Wayne Dyer and this is one of the best studies yet. Teaching over several years Wayne ties them all together to give a understanding of the Ego versus your true spirit. I know I will be listening to this several more times to grow my spirit life.

Life Changing

My therapist recommended this. She said this was one of the first spirituality tapes that she had ever purchased and it changed everything for her. It is unfortunate that this is not on CD so that I can take in my car. Also, it could really help a lot of people even these days. But, I listen to it a few minutes a day with my old boombox when I am making breakfast and packing my lunch.
I love his practical examples to change your life on a daily basis. I practice these daily. There are some parts on the tapes at the end which is difficult for me to understand, but getting the main jist is definitely enough. I am part of the hayhouse website which has other spiritual gurus, but I cannot get into them. Dr. Wayne really is someone that speaks to the heart. This is way worth the $3 you can get it for.

G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Négritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. In the work of contemporary artists from India, modernism is the ground from which to imagine futures. This richly illustrated study juxtaposes little-known, rarely seen, or previously unpublished works of modern and contemporary art with historical works, popular or mass-reproduced images, and documentary photographs. Its innovative art program renders newly visible the aesthetic and political achievements of Indian modernism.

About the Author
Lucia Berlin (1936-2004) worked brilliantly but sporadically throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Her stories are inspired by her early childhood in various Western mining towns; her glamorous teenage years in Santiago, Chile; three failed marriages; a lifelong problem with alcoholism; her years spent in Berkeley, New Mexico, and Mexico City; and the various jobs she later held to support her writing and her four sons. Sober and writing steadily by the 1990s, she took a visiting writer's post at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1994 and was soon promoted to associate professor. In 2001, in failing health, she moved to Southern California to be near her sons.

Best short stories this year!

This is a wonderful book of short stories, so fresh and different. The author raised 3 boys by herself, worked at different jobs and traveled the world. The characters in her book tell their stories and somehow it all comes together, almost like reading a novel. The stories are about things that everyone is thinking, but no one dares to say out loud: abortion, funerals, working in the emergency room, affairs with married men, dying and cancer, addiction, and being a cleaning lady.

I found the book just by chance from an ad somewhere. I popped it open and devoured it in 2 days, laughing, welling up with tears, but unable to put it down.

Highly recommended. If you don't read anything else this year, read this one.

If these stories don't make you weep, fear for the state of your immortal soul.

I heard a review on NPR and bought the collection. I can't put it down. I'm sitting on the beach, perfect day, perfect weather. I'm weeping, not only for the characters but for myself and all the feelings these stories are bringing the the surface of the brain.

I need to set my kindle down between stories and let them sink in. Wow. I'm blown away.

Amazing find!!

I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to read Lucia Berlin! After hearing her name but knowing little about her, I picked up this recently published book and discovered such a gem. She is a stunning writer who tells her stories with ferocity and courage. Her characters and sense of place are original and sometime startling, and her language is beautiful. I read a fair amount, but it's not often that I pick up something that feels so new, so exciting and strange, yet totally readable and fun.

The book itself is gorgeous, too. I love seeing it on my shelf at home. Highly recommended.

Do Not buy this, the book is so out of date relative to the current Office365 environment it is worthless. All the links are no good and many of the quoted tools were discontinued before it was printed, that is only the first two chapters..

Terrific O365 guide for IT Pros and System Architects

It is a common misconception that cloud-hosted services and infrastructure (SaaS and IaaS) are turn-key propositions that require less skill than self-hosted platforms to plan, deploy, operate and maintain. The reality is that a well-rounded book on the topic - like MSFT O365 Administration - must spend roughly 200 pages discussing planning tools and directory services, before even touching on O365 management. If considering an O365 deployment, you want this book in the arsenal.

The book is written for "Information Technology (IT) system architects who need to integrate Office 365 with existing on-premises technologies," but it is equally useful to everyone in the traditional TechNet audience, including IT Operations teams and infrastructure experts (IT Pros). Extensive attention is given to System Center monitoring and management (via SCOM, DPM, VMM, SCO, etc.), and SCOM alerts. Another chapter helps you install Orchestrator. Another covers Service Manager automation. By this time we're 400 pages deep and getting into remote administration with PowerShell.

But wait, there's more! At this point the tenancy is configured complete with monitoring and management, but we haven't gone deep on any of the actual services - SharePoint Online, SkyDrive Pro, Exchange, and Lync. The content is roughly proportional to the pain: Exchange integration gets the heaviest treatment, followed by SharePoint and Lync.

The SharePoint online coverage is terrific in describing SP's topology and constraints, and the App Store model used to add features. The book does not attempt to cover user-scoped topics like governance, information infrastructure, or social features (perhaps because it was mostly written during beta, and prior to Microsoft's announcements about Yammer integration). So you also won't see discussion of common issues with hybrid scenarios, including Search and Social.

So what you have is a great book with the insights of experience to get you into the game, plus a wealth of tips and tooling to ease the road ahead. The book is (almost surprisingly) well-written and concise with many step-by-step sections including full screen shots. I didn't work through them all so there may be corrections as these products are updated, but in the cases I read, the high-level plan is discussed first, terms are explained, risks are identified and troubleshooting guidance is provided; minor changes in the UI should not trip up anyone using this book as a reference. With a service established and integrated, the team can then look to other resources to go further into planning governance, information architecture, user experience, and App development. Well done and recommended.

Good.Instructional Book

The book covers the how-to steps for setting up Office 365 and many of the various dependencies typical of an enterprise scenario. Where it falls short is on the architecture and concepts. For as many pages as it contains, much of that paper is consumed with screen shots of licensing agreements, which is just a distraction for more advanced users. I would have preferred that space be used to describe the architecture components in more depth. The book is great for what it is and recommended for people needing the introduction to O365 in an enterprise scenario.

E-textbooks...why can't anyone get it right?

I abandoned Barnes & Noble for e-textbooks because you could only use them on a regular computer - no eReaders, no mobile devices. This eBook for Kindle has the opposite problem - I can only read it on my Kindle, meaning if I need a bigger display or other, more robust features for studying, I'm out of luck.

As for the content, the text is not bad. I wish, however, the book provided clearer definitions of the vocabulary terms listed in the back of each chapter. For many of the terms, a clear definition is provided neither in the context of the book where the word appears or in a glossary. Amazon's X-ray feature sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately, the key terms it chooses to define are not the words highlighted by the authors of this book. It falls seriously short. I give this two stars because I feel I am learning successfully from the book. For the most part, the Kindle format is just getting in the way.

It says the book is the "Kindle Edition" but it isn't actually available for Kindle. If you have a Kindle and plan to read this book on it, you're out of luck. It's "incompatible" according to Amazon customer service. This is supposedly the decision of the author or the publisher. A Kindle book that is not compatible with a Kindle. Makes a lot of sense to me!

From the Author
In 2010, I wrote the first edition of this book. At the time, there were only a handful of books about food photography, and I wanted to make an easy-to-understand guide for users of all levels. And just last year, I felt that it was time to complement the first book with a new edition. My style as a food photographer has evolved, and because of that, so has this book.I also wanted to make sure that anyone who has read the first edition will still be able to buy this book and feel that their purchase was worth it! Here are some things that you will discover with this book in comparison with the last one:

• Brand-new photos: I updated nearly ALL of the images in the book. There are a handful of photos (mostly technical photos) that are the same, but I made a concerted effort to use brand-new images.
• Condensed basic photography chapters: I had some comments in the reviews about there being "too much" information on basic photography. Because of this, I condensed the first three chapters into only two chapters; Chapter 1 is now a combination of two chapters with similar material (basic photography).
• Updated info on Lighting and Food Styling: Chapter 2 (lighting) was updated to add more information on different angles of light, and Chapter 3 (food and prop styling) was edited to reflect my updated food-styling style.
• A Brand New Chapter: Chapter 5 is a brand-new chapter on social media, copyright, watermarking, website, etc (getting your presence online).
• Updated post-processing chapter: Chapter 6 (post-processing) is completely re-written with Lightroom as the software (my other book has Photoshop for the tutorials).
• Brand-new behind-the-scenes: Chapter 7 (Behind the Scenes) is all brand-new examples.

About the Author

Nicole S. Young is a full-time photographer specializing in food and landscape photography, and she also licenses her images through iStockphoto and Getty Images. Nicole is an accredited Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) in Photoshop, owns and operates the Nicolesy Store, and is a regular contributor to the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and Photofocus websites. The author of several books, including Plug In with onOne Software and the first edition of Food Photography: From Snapshots to Great Shots, Nicole blogs at nicolesy.com. She lives in Portland, OR.

Excellent book for learning about fundamentals of food photography

This excellent book, written for beginner and intermediate photographers, provides a solid foundation for food photography techniques. The book is well organized and has an informative and friendly tone. The first chapter covers basic information on equipment and relationship between exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO). Chapters 2 through 4 discuss techniques, equipment, and props for food photography. Chapter 5 discusses aspects of social media and web presence, including ways to reduce the possibility of image theft. Chapter 6 covers a selection of elements of the processing software Adobe Lightroom that can be applied for organizing, developing, and exporting images. Chapter 7, titled “Behind the Scenes,” takes the reader through a photo shoot from start to finish, which uses the cumulative information of prior chapters. Chapters 1 through 6 end with challenges that the reader can work on to gain experience with the material covered.
Throughout the book, the author makes liberal use of photographs and graphics to illustrate points contained in the text. The images are excellent examples for the text and get the points across that the author is trying to make. In addition, information on the camera, lens, and exposure settings for each photograph are provided.
Lighting is covered in Chapter 2 and I found this to be a very interesting chapter describing types of light, light direction, light quality, and light modifiers and accessories. As elsewhere throughout the book, the author does an excellent job of showing how scenes were set up as well as the resulting images. She also provides numerous photo examples of effects of different lighting, which aids the reader greatly in being able to see the results of various lighting options.
Chapter 3 covers styling and props. Among the broad array of topics related to styling and props included in this chapter, the author puts a concerted effort into providing information that will help in the food looking its best. She provides numerous tips to assist the photographer in quality of presentation. Information ranges along a large spectrum from the freshness of the food to selection of textiles and food styling, with many other topics included.
Framing and composition are covered in Chapter 4. This informative chapter provides key elements for setting up the composition, perspective, grouping, framing, choosing focal length, and setting aperture to obtain the best depth of field for the shot. I really found the discussions and photos that describe lens compression and depth of field to be both informative and effective. A set of images is provided that illustrate lens compression for focal lengths ranging from 28 to 200mm. This set of images, for me, was one of the most powerful in the book. A similar set of photos is provided to illustrate changes in depth of field.
In Chapter 5, the author provides valuable information on setting up a portfolio and web presence, as well as other actions that the photographer can take to get established and known. The chapter also has a section on protecting your images from theft, to the extent that you can (no method is perfect), including registering copyrighted images and adding watermarks.
Chapter 6 provides basics on selected components of Adobe Lightroom. This chapter is not meant to be an exhaustive Lightroom manual, but gives sufficient information for people who are new to Lightroom to get started using the Library and Develop Modules. Information on exporting files is also included.
Chapter 7 takes the reader through the process of creating four images. This chapter puts material from the prior chapters into practice in an organized manner.
In summary, this book is an excellent choice for someone interested in food photography. The writing is clear, information is thorough, and the book is well organized. Images to supplement the text are numerous, but not superfluous, and hit the mark on their function of illustrating components of the text. I would highly recommend this book.

A great book giving great advice

The Food Photography book deals with how to photograph food. This book does not assume that you are a pro photographer, and caters for people who have different levels of photography experience. Having said that it is not a book that is light on the experience it imparts, and any photographer regardless of experience who is wanting to learn the skills of photographing food can learn a lot.

The book deals with the fundamentals that every food photographer should know about, and talks about subjects such as obtaining the best lighting, how to use props and style a shot. The composition of the shots, through to the use of social media, (which is now becoming a huge area for photography, and getting your shots noticed!) is also dealt with as is post processing of your digital shots. The post-processing section is done using Adobe Lightroom, which is something that I am both used to and use, so I am comfortable with this but if you don't have Adobe Lightroom, these techniques can be transferred if you use other post processing software.

Having read and gone through the Adobe Lightroom chapter, I found it to be comprehensive enough to ensure you have the knowledge and skills required to process your shots without having to refer to the heavier books on Adobe Lightroom. You may after going through the chapter find that you want to learn more about Adobe Lightroom, and after reading the chapter you will already have the skills and language needed to delve into these books about Adobe Lightroom, but I would say that the skills you learn will be more than adequate.

The best thing I have found about this book is an image is featured, and the techniques used are explored so that you can reproduce the shot. The equipment used is not out of the reach of the normal photographer and shows the differences using a compact camera against a DLSR gives, and how little techniques such as lighting, and props can be incorporated into your images that although subtle, give a huge difference to the finished shot.

The author Nicole S Young is a photographer who specialises in food photography (among other things) and the experience she imparts in this book, is second to none. They are the same techniques she uses in her everyday life, and she talks about how to photograph food in differing scenarios from restaurants, to the more styled scenes that she uses within her blog and website.

If you need a book to give you a good grounding in food photography then this is the book for you, it will talk you through the techniques to use, and illustrate these techniques so that you can follow them easily. You will pick up some great techniques, and by looking at the images produced you will find a lot of inspiration to your photography.

The techniques talked about are also applicable to other areas of close up photography and as such I have found the book invaluable in giving me some extra tricks that I can employ in my photography. I found the chapters concise and well written, and although I read through the book in order, I find myself referring to different chapters in an ad-hoc way to refresh myself. I am also referring to the book for inspiration to my close up photography work by looking how a particular shot is lit, and to gain inspiration on how to style and prop particular shots.

This book has got me coming back to again and again, and anyone who wants to learn and progress their food photography should have a copy.

Beautiful, great tips, and perfect for a minimalist photographer that wants great results.

I absolutely loved this book. As an architectural photographer, I needed to transition my skills into food photography. This book was perfect. It emphasizes it's instruction on the 20% of effort that gets 80% of the results. There's not too much emphasis on photography basics that are not necessary for most photographers. It helps people that don't need to spend money on equipment that gives them diminishing returns on the final result in the quality of the photo. There are a lot of good pictures and diagrams to help demonstrate her setups. It is a huge improvement over the 1st edition, even though I loved the 1st edition as well. The author comes across as humble and passionate. I love that.
