The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing

It is an interesting analysis of Riefenstahl's Gertrude Stein's, Lee Miller, and Janet Flanner's fascination with Hitler, and how they wove him into the structure and narratives of their own lives. Gertrude's Stein's relationship was somewhat ambivalent, even though she did promote him for the 1934 Nobel Peace Prize. As a Jew it didn't make very much sense but then most of her writing doesn't either. She's an esthete whose politics were very much shaded to the right, thanks to her close relationship with Bernard Fay, supporter of Petain and anti-Semite. She survived the War thanks to Fay and her attempts to get her translations of Petain's speeches published by Cerf in America. The Lee Miller section is good, but not very convincing. The Riefenstahl section was a rehash of the usual leftist line(ala Susan Sontag) and a lot of nonsense about cinematic semiology.. She has a very poor writing style, drenched as it is in feminist jargon. Still, I would say that it is an intelligent book and worth looking at. after you've read Pages, Rhiel's and O'Sickey's collection of essays in Riefenstahl Screened. Also read Barbara Will's book, Unlikely Collaborator's, which is a more in depth analysis of Stein's relationship to Bernard Fay and her support of Fascism. To be fair, the book says at the outset that it is only focusing on specific terms of the relationship between dictator and artist, so I can't fault her for paring down her information. My problem with the book is that I find that most feminist prose to be off-putting, though they do have a perspective worth reading. Interesting ,though, how she doesn't spend much time discussing Lee Miller's relationship to her father, who took countless nude photos of her form childhood on. He seemed to me to be the ultimate patriarchal tyrant.

Cooper and his center hit big some 20 years ago with Aerobics, which, like his Controlling Cholesterol (1988), is one of the all-time best-selling health self-help books. Here he combines his aerobic approach to better health with diet and dietary supplement strategies designed to cope with free radicals, the unstable oxygen molecules that recent research has fingered for aiding and abetting heart disease, cancer, cataracts, and various complaints attendant upon the aging process. The most marked departure from his former advice, he says, is a new skepticism about very frequent high-intensity exercise. That skepticism arises, however, from cases such as those that Cooper reports of people who were regular strenuous exercisers and yet came down with quickly fatal diseases. Accordingly, the exercise program he recommends here is lower-intensity. New Recommendations Supplant the Info in this Book

This book is good in its underlying theme -- take antioxidants b-carotene, vit C, vit E to counter free radical damage -- but, evidently, its specific recommendations are outdated. Two sets of antioxidant dosages are recommended, a small dose for "health and longevity" exercisers, and a large dose for "athletic" exercisers, where the dividing line between types of exercisers is 50 aerobics points per week. Dr Cooper's latest recommendations, which can be found at cooperwellness.com, change the small and large dosages, and the dividing line has been changed to 150 aerobics points per week.

Evidence not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be

This book discusses ways to reduce the free radical damage that is thought to lead cancer and heart disease. Cooper presents ways to do so through exercise, diet, and supplements. And it the supplements part that is the most controversial of this book.
Dr. Cooper was one of the first noted fitness experts to recommend people start taking high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He recommends taking levels that are several times the RDA for these nutrients.
Cooper cites many scientific studies that show high does of these antioxidants reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. However, this book was originally published in 1994, and more recent studies have not given unqualified support to these earlier studies. In fact, more recent studies have been mixed.
Some studies do show that taking antioxidants reduce risk, but other studies show there is no effect. I summarize many of these studies in a chapter on supplements in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible." My conclusion is that there is some evidence for the benefit of taking antioxidants, but it is not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be. There may or may not be any benefit to the practice.
Further clouding whether to take these supplements is the risk of side effects. Fortunately, Cooper does list possible side effects one might experience.
Another issue that Cooper does not address is the cost factor. Vitamin C is rather inexpensive and vitamin E and selenium moderately so, but beta-carotene tends to be rather expensive. And beta-carotene is the antioxidant with the least evidence supporting it.
Given the split evidence, I would say that if money is tight, one should spend their money on healthy food, not supplements. It is foods like fruits and vegetables that have unqualified evidence for their health benefits. And Cooper does include information on what foods are highest in the antioxidants and how best to prepare them to retain the nutrients. And my book provides further details on what foods help to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and strokes.
As for myself, I have tried taking antioxidants in the amounts Cooper recommends, but I ended up with some of the side effects he mentions. I even tried taking different brands and forms of each nutrient and still had problems. So I simply don't bother with them anymore and focus on eating a healthy diet instead.

For years, I've been a big fan and follower of Dr. Cooper'saerobic exercise program. Nevertheless, I'll advise caution beforeundertaking Dr. Cooper's prescription for anti-oxidantsupplements. Dr. Cooper's recommendations for Vitamins C and E and beta-carotene are remarkably similar to those criticized as being without scientific foundation by a recent (April, 2000) Institute of Medicine Report.
The prudent reader will consider the Institute's report before joining Dr. Cooper's revolution...

Compelling history, fast action

If walls could talk, would they tell stories of the past, present or future?
While exploring Malta for "Ironfire," author David Ball rented a small room overlooking the Grand Harbor and its ancient battlements of St. Elmo and St. Angelo -- 16th century fortresses made legendary in the final conflict of the Crusades.
"At night, when it's quiet enough, and if you're listening carefully," Ball says today, "you can still hear the walls [of the forts] whispering their tales."
Perhaps they spoke to him of knights and pirates. Or perhaps something bigger: A world where West and Middle East might never set aside two millennia of discord.
Ball's third novel is one of those sweeping historical epics that encompasses diverse cultures and decades in a part of the world -- and human affairs -- that is still scoured by the crosswinds of conflict. His history is concrete, but a novel is not merely a history textbook. It must engage the reader with characters, literally individual humans with dreams, losses, flaws, quests, regrets, fears, faith and misgivings. Pasternak did it. So did Clavell, Michener and Jean Auel.
Comes now David Ball, who has built an action-packed, often erotic and always sensual epic-adventure around a handful of well-developed characters swept up in the maelstrom of 16th century holy wars between two different worlds. Merely developing three-dimensional characters in modern publishing is a rare notion; sustaining a reader's interest in them over nearly 700 pages is the literary equivalent of finding weapons of mass destruction in Baghdad. It might happen, but it's damned hard to do.
But in 1552, there are no weapons of mass destruction. Battles are fought with blades, pikes, crude firearms, armor and horses. There is no such thing as an air war, and navies are powered by slaves and wind. There is no shock nor awe, only sieges that can last months or years.
One of the truest tests of a good historical novel is how inextricably fiction entangles with fact. "Ironfire" is marbled with real historic figures such as the near-mythic Muslim pirate Dragut Rais; Jean Parisot de la Valette, the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John whose name was given to Malta's capital city; and even Father Jesuald, a heretic priest burned at the stake in Malta for advocating priestly marriages.
And infusing every action is the pungency of smoldering religious fires, not just Islam and Christianity, but Judaism, too. In that combustible mix of passions alone, Ball captures the essence of a modern catastrophe.
If walls could talk, they'd eagerly tell their stories to Ball.

Great epic historical fiction

After what I thought was a weak start and a bit "over the top" especially regarding the character of Nico, I found myself drawn into the time, cultures, and conflicts of the Knights of Malta. Even Nico as he evolved into Asha became a fascinating character and a great look at what becomes of individuals who are torn from their culture and injected into another one especially when they are young. The character of Christien Luc de Vries was especially interesting. His struggles with the expectations of his father, his fascinationg with surgery, and his place among the Knights of Malta make for interesting internal conflicts. And of course, the juxtaposition of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism on one small island gives a great background for the struggles we are still facing. Overall, a great read.

a real page turner

I picked this book up in Huartulco Mexico while on vacation and just could not put it down! I read the entire thing while on vacation and found it mesmerising and exciting. The author writes in a style which is very passionate, but also highly informative and tells a wonderful tale. Read this one!
