The best of both worlds

This book explains the pros and cons of puree feeding and baby-led-weaning and let's you decide (without guilt) what you think is best for your baby. It was helpful for me to understand, so I could explain my final decision better to friends and family. I have decided to do baby-led weaning and no purees, but if I was somewhere where all I had was purees, I wouldn't have a problem feeding those to him too. I think the author did a good job to present both sides and help fight against the mommy wars. I read "Baby Led Weaning" by Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett after I read this one, and I don't think it really gave a guilt trip, but it was nice to understand both options first.

Yes it's written by the British and they call doctors "healthcare visitors," but I don't think that took away from the content. "Baby Led Weaning" does the same thing. In fact, we call it "Baby Led Solids" in the U.S. to avoid confusion with stopping breastfeeding. You keep breastfeeding while letting baby slowly learn to eat solids on his own.

Excellent Advice for Nursing Moms too

Even though this book is geared towards a European/UK audience, I really enjoyed how the author gave specific advice as to how much solids a baby is to eat as well as how much the baby should be drinking too. I found as a nursing mother a lot of the solids books failed to explain how often my son should nurse as well as how much solids he should be eating. Weaning Made Easy gave me a good guideline and peace of mind knowing that I was giving my son good nutrition for his growing body.

Helped me decide

I wasn't sure how I wanted to start solids with my babe. I bought this book because I heard a lot about Baby Led Weaning but the pediatrician suggested rice cereal and purées. This gave me the information I was looking for without being biased. I appreciate that it gives pros and cons for both methods. We decided to use a combination approach. It seems silly to say but I didn't really realize that it didn't have to be one way or the other. We just do what works in the moment and my 5 month old is loving it.

About the Author

John A. Van de Walle was a professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a leader in mathematics education who regularly offered professional development workshops for K–8 teachers in the United States and Canada focused on mathematics instruction that engaged students in mathematical reasoning and problem solving. He visited many classrooms and worked with teachers to implement student-centered math lessons. He co-authored the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics K–6 series and contributed to the original Pearson School mathematics program enVisionMATH. Karen is the volume editor of Annual Perspectives in Mathematics Education: Using Research to Improve Instruction and is the co-author of Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Discovering Lessons for the Common Core State Standards in Grades K-5 and Putting Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction into Practice Pre-K – Grade 2. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. She continues to work in classrooms with teachers of students with disabilities.

Jennifer M. Bay-Williams is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers. Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also authored and co-authored numerous books, including: Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8, Mathematics Coaching: Resources and Tools for Coaches and Other Leaders. Jennifer is on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and has previously served on the Board of Directors for TODOS: Equity for All and as secretary and president for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).

Great Resource!

I have been teaching math for 10 years and read this book for a graduate class. It is such a great resource for new and veteran teachers! It offers realistic ways for teachers to move away from the "traditional" way most teach with direct instruction and move toward student-centered problem solving strategies. I'm hoping the cost of it goes down so it is more accessible for people because it is changing the way I teach!

This book is an amazing resource for an elementary school teachers. I had the pleasure of taking a college course taught by one of the writers, using this book. This is truly one of the most valuable college textbooks I have used. I imagine that I will be referencing it several hundred times in my career. It's great! One of the best features is that each chapter has a list of children's literature that goes with the concept taught! So helpful!

Chandresh Bhardwaj
Chandresh Bhardwaj is a seventh-generation lineage holder from a family of Indian gurus practicing the Tantric tradition. A must read for all!

Break the Norms is a must read for anyone that wants to get to know themselves a little bit better. This is not a book about God and it is not a book about religion. It is a book about learning to listen to your soul. From the very first page Chandresh challenges you to "Break The Norms" and step out of your comfort zone. He pushes you to question the way you have lived your life so far to see if you really are where you're meant to be.
He takes taboo topics like work, religion, and sex and then asks you to consider your thoughts on each subject rather than society's thoughts. While the book is a quick read, I have already found myself going back to re-read sections and have come back with a little bit more each time.
Reading this book is a lot like having a conversation with the man himself, I can hear Chandresh's voice in the introduction and relate his journey to my own.
Chandresh Bhardwaj has truly Broken the Norms with his first book. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next!

A refreshing, no BS take on spirituality.

The best teachers are those that enable students to depend on their own strength rather than establishing a dependency on the teacher's guidance. Break The Norms invites anyone brave enough to deconstruct, question their own hard-held beliefs to step into an ability every person has but few ever venture to claim: trust in one's self to determine truth.

Break The Norms offers no answers about spirituality. It presents tried and true, ancient techniques for one to find answers for them self. Several times in this book, the author sincerely asks the reader not to "take my word for it." What a sigh of relief that is, compared to the widespread need for people to believe what you believe that seems to be present in the US.

With such an exponentially growing interest in the west for esoteric teachings of the east, endless texts on spirituality are readily available in bookstores across America. But I find a lot of them are mere summaries and interpretations of research found in other texts. Chandresh comes from a line of spiritual gurus in India. His authority on eastern teachings comes from direct experience and his upbringing; Not from a curriculum or from books. He is the kind of person a scholar would interview in order to write a credible book of this kind. But the incredible thing about this book is you're cutting out the middle man. Information from the source, rather than from someone who "has a source."

The one thing I will warn you about, is not to expect to read an English masterpiece. Although there are many powerful, quote-worthy lines, this is not a text that will go down in history for its mastery of the English language. Well written and organized, though it is, it differs from other spiritual texts which tend to use "woo-woo" spiritual jargon and overly poetic "word soup" which I have always found annoying and useless. Just tell it to me like it is. Break The Norms is a no-bullshit, concise and direct introduction of Eastern meditation techniques paired with modern practicality and application. It doesn't aim to distract you with "New Age" dreamy descriptions of far out ideas. The author of Break The Norms views these eastern teachings as well within reach for a western audience, and presents them as such.

Whether you have no interest in meditation, are just now looking into starting a meditation practice, or are well experienced, everyone can take away something from this book.

Must read - multiple times!!

I have been keenly awaiting a book by Chandresh as his thoughts through break the norms have been so refreshing and true. The book lives up to my high expectations...and went much beyond. His insights on God and relationships are truly remarkable as it forces you to ask unconformable questions.
On many fronts Chandresh's thoughts through this book (especially the exercises after each chapter) have challenged me to look at things differently and I have indeed seen changes.

I have read my share of spiritual books for sure - and while I can say this is one of the best I have read in a long time, I must admit I have only scratched the surface when it comes to learning from this book.
It's going to take a few re-reads and practice before I am ready to move on. Hopefully, Chandresh will have another one by then !!

For anyone interested in Recreational Mathematics,this 2014 book by Ian Stewart is like a breath of fresh air.Stewart has already given us enough Mathematical books to fill a good sized bookcase..A list of these books is in the front of this book.Listed are 27 by Ian Stewart,5 written with Jack Cohen,and another 6 with Terry Prachtt & Jack Cohen.All of these books are what we call Mathematical Recreations.
Ian is rapidely replacing the great Martin Gardner, who passed away a few years ago,and who many mathematical enthusiasts think of as "The Father of Mathematical Recreations.You may remember him for his monthly section,Mathematical Recreations, in the magazine Scientific American,which he wrote for over 25 years.Then, there were his many books on the subject.
Mathematical Recreations is a far cry from what one remembers they were subjected to in school.It deals with all sorts of oddities,corundums,mysteries,puzzling concepts,and just the fun,and fascinating things that can be found occuring in the world of mathematics.Just about anyone with a high school background will have no problem understanding and enjoying as well as being fascinated with what is in this book.
The book is not broken down into chapters,but into about 125 subjects that will amaze you.

A sexy, great read!!

This was a great book, with a role-reversal that was written beautifully. I enjoyed getting to know Artie and Mallory, and I would recommend this hot, and sexy read!

An OK quick read. :)

Oooh, all the sweetness and cheesiness is making me want to simply hug somebody. Although that could lead to a more strange outcome. ;)

I loved how their story developed from enemies to lovers. In the first few pages it's made clear why Mallory thinks Artie disliked her so much. But after he tells her the real reason behind his behaviour, he instantly became one of my favourite male characters. I loved his awkwardness and shyness around her and thankfully she really pushed his buttons and brought forth the real Artie, that is not afraid of showing her how he really feels about her. As for Mallory, she knows what she wants. She's sassy and playful but has also her more woundable moments. Together they really make such a cute couple.

The only thing that bothered me was that I'd have loved to see how their story continued. Also, a shame there is no epilogue.
Still, this is a great read, if you want something light and sweet. :D

Good, quickie. No pun intended. Opposites attract tropes are one of my favorites so I enjoyed the aspect of the novel but it was much too short for any significant character development and also while it stands alone there were characters that were obviously part of other books, maybe. I felt like I was missing something. The writing is excellent and the love scenes steamy. I will definitely read other, longer books by this author.

Amazing story

I absolutely loved the book. The story offers a whole new perspective about the universe which I found rather funny towards the end.

Pros:
-interesting plot that will keep you engaged right till the end
-great character development
-sweet, innocent romance story that isn't filled with teenage angst and doesn't leave you wanting to wring your heart out
-a refreshing setting for a story of this genre. The last half of the book mainly revolves around the wars set in Afghanistan and Iraq (think Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden)
-detailed scenes during surgery (which I really enjoyed because most authors like to make characters pass out at this point to skip the details) but don't worry: it focuses more on the procedure and less on the gore and violence. Nothing you won't let your 13-year-old read, in my opinion
-the story delivers a lot of meaningful messages that I really appreciate. Some are really subtle so you might not notice it until you engage in a book discussion with a friend

Cons:
-if you are a Christian/Muslim, you might feel a little uncomfortable reading the book at the beginning. I know I did.
-doesn't offer much in terms of surprises and twists
-a lot of unexplained or unresolved plots that you will have to read the other series by Anna Erishkigal to understand (but you can get along relatively well even if this is your first read. It's just that reading the other works gives you a whole new insight to the depth of the supporting characters)
-female protagonist feels a little too self-righteous at times, which can be quite annoying

4.5 Stars for Angel of Death: A Love Story!

Fascinating is the first word that comes to mind. Epic, breathtaking, captivating, and compelling are a few more.

A love story at it's core, Angel of Death is a fantasy based on Earthly history and Heavenly myth. Earth is a hellmouth that must be guarded by creatures of and from Heaven against incursions of the evil Moloch and his minions. Middle East conflicts through the millennia are background for the battles fought between Moloch's operatives and Heaven's agents. I found the Earthly and Heavenly politics to be a bit cumbersome, but ultimately, did not hinder the love story.

Azrael, the Angel of Death, is a solitary being that cannot touch anyone without killing them. Elisabeth bears the scars of a childhood accident which left her lame, orphaned, and lonely too. While the battles rage, Azrael and Elisabeth are two souls finding each other after 2,300 years apart. The romance between Azrael and Elisabeth was touching in so many ways!

This is not a light-hearted fantasy. It is serious, complex, transcendental, and at times, heartbreaking. But Angel of Death does have it's lighter moments. Several wonderful secondary characters add as much humor as they do drama, Lucifer being one of my favorites. Yes, I said 'Lucifer'!

Read this book if you like fantasy, angels (not guardian), romance, and history. Or if you just want to read a good story!

Incredibly Interesting

The warnings about the book the author included were not necessary for me as I'm pretty open to new story lines. This author has a unique style, one that grabbed me from the get-go. I read the other review about the protagonist being a tad self-righteous and I do understand that and yet given her story, it makes sense.
I am VERY glad that this book was written because I have read through the first three of The Swords of the Gods Saga...not realizing there are 2 more that will be forthcoming. This book gives clues as to the outcome of those three, which helps during the waiting period!
Overall the author, her series, shorter stories and this book are captivating(can't put it down even way too late at night on a work night) and stunning...Compared to some of the self-published books I've read on Amazon this wins hands down, and should be controversial enough to be a best seller! Hats off to the writer, her imagination and ability to share...great gift to the reading world. Thank you!
