[Read by Dave Mallow]

At long last, the epic biography Ted Williams deserves -- and that his fans have been waiting for. -- The Kid is biography of the highest literary order, a thrilling and honest account of a legend in all his glory and human complexity. In his final at-bat, Williams hit a home run. Bradlee's marvelous book clears the fences, too.

Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than five hundred home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in World War II and Korea. He hit home runs farther than any player before him -- and traveled a long way himself, as Ben Bradlee Jr.'s grand biography reveals. Born in 1918 in San Diego, Ted would spend most of his life disguising his Mexican heritage. During his twenty-two years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams electrified crowds across America -- and shocked them, too. His notorious clashes with the press and fans threatened his reputation. Yet while he was a god in the batter's box, he was profoundly human once he stepped away from the plate. His ferocity came to define his troubled domestic life. While baseball might have been straightforward for Ted Williams, life was not.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2013: In an age of performance enhancing drugs and a culture of wealth and deceit in professional sports, it's refreshing to revisit the feats of one of baseball’s best: the last man to hit .400 in a season, with a lifetime .344 batting average, who played remarkable baseball until age 40 and who reigns as the best all-around hitter in history. What sets this exhaustive exploration apart from other Ted Williams biographies is the author's finesse at maintaining a fan's enthusiasm for his remarkable subject while confronting the warts-and-all reality of an imperfect hero. Boston Globe reporter-editor Ben Bradlee Jr. admits at the start that Williams was, indeed, "my hero." Still, Bradlee never shies from dark side of the Williams myth: the insecure immigrant's son; the imperfect father and husband; the raging hothead, who flaunted his disdain for the press and a few teammates. Bradlee spent a decade investigating every detail of Williams’s 83 years--and beyond. He even uncovers gruesome tidbits about the strange aftermath of Williams’s death in 2002, when his body was taken to a cryonics facility, his head severed and then frozen inside a Tuperware-like container. Passionately researched and artfully told, this is much more than a sports story; it's the sprawling saga of a talented, tenacious, tumultuous, one-of-a-kind American man. --Neal Thompson

Review
"Sumptuous..The Kid reads like an epic....Bradlee has given us the fullest exploration yet of his monumental ego and the best explanation for his vast inferiority complex."―Allen Barra, Boston Globe

"What distinguishes Bradlee's The Kid from the rest of Williams lit is, its size and the depth of its reporting....Bradlee's expansiveness enables his book to transcend the familiar limits of the sports bio and to become instead a hard-to-put-down account of a fascinating American life."―Charles McGrath, New York Times Book Review

"Superb....Ted Williams hated what he considered invasions of his privacy, but perfectionist that he was, he would probably have to concede that the work ethic that underpins The Kid is exemplary....When I began reading this book, I thought that only baseball fans would find it interesting. But after finishing The Kid, I suspect that even those indifferent to the sport might find its human drama absorbing."―Howard Schneider, Wall Street Journal

"The prose is breezy, the research and reporting are impeccable....This book very much sets out to be the definitive document of a great, complicated, fascinating person and ultimately, it succeeds."―Dave Bry, Slate

"Bradlee's brilliant account is required reading for any Red Sox fan. It's also a fascinating portrait of a complex character that a baseball agnostic or even a Yankees fan will find hard to put down."―Jerry Harkavy, Associated Press

Ben Bradlee Jr. hits a grand slam across the Green Monster of Fenway Park in this definitive life of the Kid Ted Williams!
By C. M Mills
If you read one sports biography each year then this is the selection for you! What a massive book about (arguably) baseball's all time greatest hitter. The life of Ted Williams (1918-2002) comes to colorful life in this very long biography. (In my opinion the book could have been more judiciously edited). Ben Bradlee Jr. a longtime Boston based journalist has provided a detailed look at the man called by many nicknames:" Teddy Baseball, the Splendid Splinter and most famously The Kid.
Ted Williams was born in San Diego into a family of low middle class struggle. His mother was Mexican which Williams kept long hidden. Williams reached out to men like Pumpsie Green the first African-American to play for the Red Sox in 1959. The Red Sox under their owner Tom Yawkey were the last major league team to integrate their squad. Ted also called for the induction of players such as Satchel Paige and Monte Irwin and other stars from the Negro Leagues. This stand was most clearly stated when Teddy Baseball was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
Ted Williams played for the minor league San Diego Padres and the Minneapolis Milles before breaking into the majors with the Boston Rex Sox in 1939. Williams was a great hitter posting a .344 lifetime batting average. Williams was the last man to hilt 400 in
1941, Williams lost the MVP crown to his arch rival Joe DiMaggio who hit in 56 straight games as he led the Yankees to the pennant. Williams played in one World Series in 1946 when the Bosox fell to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ted was famous for his winning home run in the 1949 All Star Game. Teddy Ballgame won six hitting crowns and twice was named AL MVP.
Williams statistics would have been even more astounding if he had not bravely served as a Marine Corp Aviator in both World War II and Korea. In Korea he flew thirty-nine combat missions and became a friend of John Glenn the future astronaut and United States Senator from Ohio.
Ted Williams was a complex and volatile man with a hair trigger temper. Williams gave of his time and money visiting dying children, supporting the Jimmy Fund to aid cancer patients and helping his friends and family when they had financial problems. Ted was loyal and a generally friendly man whose temper could explode. He was profane and hated reporters. Williams may have been bipolar and today would have been treated for mental health issues.
Ted had a stormy private life. He was married three times and all unions ended in divorce. He had a difficult relationships with his three children Bobby Jo by first wife Doris'; John Henry and Claudia by his third wife Dolores. John Henry was a bit of a rogue. He had Ted preserved on ice and his head removed from his body to be preserved by ALCOR a cryonotics company. John Henry forced his aging and ill dad into the lucrative memorabilia market.
Ted Williams comes across as a baseball version of John Wayne or a character in an Ernest Hemingway short story. Williams was a perfectionist in all his major loves including:": hitting a baseball;' fishing with professional level skill'; hunting'; photography and serial womanizing. Ted professed to be an agnostic but late in life professed believe in Christ as Lord. Ted was a brilliant man who mastered the many challenges in his life.
Ben Bradlee is to be commended for his decade of research and his fluid prose which makes the Kid of baseball and his times come alive in countless anecdotes. Ted Williams, warts and all, was a great American icon and a patriot. God bless his troubled soul. A great book highly recommended. It kept me enthralled for the week I took to carve time out of my schedule to read it.

A detailed bio of the Splendid Splinter
By Steven Peterson
Ted Williams was a tortured person, as this lengthy biography makes clear. But, oh my, what a hitter he was! The last player to hit .400. With a major league career that began in 1939, in 1957--at an advanced age for a player--he hit .388. If he had any legs left, he may well have hit .400 if he would have been able to get some "leg hits."

The book accomplishes several worthy goals. First, it provides a big picture description and analysis of his baseball career--from the time when he first started playing until his retirement. It shows a growth as a player--from indifferent to playing defense to becoming a pretty decent outfielder. The book depicts his approach to hitting very nicely. It also shows the volatile side of him, when he would lose his temper, publicly get into painful disputes with reporters, sometimes not hustling when he would become angry with someone, and so on. And the ways he would "psyche" himself for a game. For instance, taking swings in the locker room, he would say: "I'm Teddy [expletive deleted] Ballgame of the Major [expletive deleted] Leagues. How can this pitcher get me out with his [expletive deleted] pitching" (I could not retrieve the exact quotation, but this is close]. The book has his batting statistics at the end (page 785), and that is helpful, to get a sense of the trajectory of his career.

Second, it gives a glimpse of Williams as a person. Not always pretty. He was married a number of times and the end result was often unpleasant. He had numerous affairs, had a wicked temper. In short, he tended to treat his wives badly. While his children would say that he was a good father, he was often away. And his personality. . . . He was obviously someone with some emotional/mental problems. He would sometimes get discouraged easily; he would lash out at people; and so on.

Third, it portrays his distressing state near the end of his life. Health problems came up. His son was manipulative and tried to develop a career and lots of income, and he was not above misusing his father. Perhaps most distressing, he wanted to "freeze" his father after death, rather than allowing Williams to be cremated as he had requested. The story is that Williams finally agreed, but the book certainly makes it appear that his son and a daughter manipulated him into the decision.

A richly told tale of a larger than life figure, with larger than life problems, who was a larger than life baseball player.

A Decade of Research Finally Brought to Fruition
By Bill Emblom
Whew! It has taken me two weeks to pioneer my way through this detailed biography of Ted Williams authored by Ben Bradlee, Jr. but the effort was worth it. We now have had two five star biographies on Williams, the other by Lee Montville entitled "Ted Williams". Both are worth your time. If you want to know practically everything you care to know and more about Teddy Ballgame than Bradlee's book "The Kid" would be the book to read. Some may feel they are being told more than what would interest them because Bradlee goes into great detail about the several wives of Williams in addition to his children and step-children. In addition there is a detailed hassle regarding Ted being "stored" in the Alcor facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, that may be belaboring to some readers.

Ted Williams was a man of many mood swings which may have dated back to his childhood where his mother was a dedicated worker with the Salvation Army and pretty much ignored him as did his father as well. Williams could be profanely abusive to people including his many wives and others who crossed his path. He, no doubt, could be very difficult to live with. On the other hand he could be very gentle with youngsters and would go out of his way to be of assistance to others who were in need. It was the great Rogers Hornsby who gave Williams the advice to "get a good ball to hit." Red Sox clubhouse man Johnny Orlando tagged Williams with the nickname "The Kid.".

Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey was often beloved by his players. He did, however, run a house of prostitution in South Carolina in which he, himself, took advantage of. We have often heard of "The curse of the Bambino" in which the Bosox failed for so many years to win a championship due to their shipping Babe Ruth off to the Yankees in 1920. However, the real curse lies in the lap of owner Tom Yawkey who wanted nothing to do with having an African-American player on the team. The Sox turned down both Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays in a tryout. Can you imagine those two in addition to Williams in the Hub's lineup at the same time during the 1950s? Yawkey and bigoted manager Mike "Pinky" Higgins have only themselves to blame for Boston's lackluster teams during that golden decade of the '50s.

Author Bradlee gives ample coverage of Ted Williams' military career. Ted was a flight instructor in World War II and had more interest in flying than in playing wartime baseball in the army. He was disappointed to say the least in being recalled to fight in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. However, his military career was exemplary and exhibited well-disciplined behavior.

Williams' greatest thrill in baseball was his walk-off home run in the 1941 All-Star game. He batted a disappointing .200 in the 1946 World Series but he had suffered an injury to his elbow by a pitched ball prior to the start of the Fall Classic.

A biography on Ted Williams would not be complete without a detailed coverage of his fishing exploits with his favorite locations being the Florida Keys, the Islamorada in the Upper Keys, and the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada.

Ted toyed with the idea of quitting in the mid-1950s until a fan named Ed Mifflin convinced him to continue playing so he could achieve milestones that were within his reach. The book covers anecdotes of several Red Sox players such as Don Buddin, Sammy White, Ted Lepcio, and Milt Bolling all of whom I remember from my baseball cards of the 1950s and my following of the Detroit Tigers.

This book is a massive effort by author Ben Bradlee, Jr. which took him a decade to bring to fruition. It also includes three separate sections of photographs. If you want to know most everything about Ted Williams' life then this would be the book to read. If you want another five star biography on Ted Williams which will provide you with less detail then I would suggest you read Lee Montville's book entitled Ted Williams. Both are outstanding.

The Invisible College: What a Group of Scientists Has Discovered about UFO Influence on the Human Race, by Jacques Vallee

What is the nature of unidentified aerial phenomena? Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college," has grown into a larger, multi-nation volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current-and unanswered.

"I believe that a powerful force has influenced the human race in the past and is again influencing it now. Does this force represent alien intervention, or does it originate entirely within human consciousness? This is the question that forms the basis of the work of the Invisible College of UFO researchers." -- Jacques Vallee

"THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE is unlike any other UFO book ever written. Dr. Vallee questions what everybody else takes for granted, doubts what everybody believes, drenches us with data that doesn't 'fit' any of the theories of either the True Believers or the die-hard non-believers and then offers a hypothesis on his own." -- Robert Anton Wilson

"An important book-not only are UFOs and psychic events inextricably linked, as Dr. Vallee so nicely points out, but neither can be understood without an appreciation of the role of myth, tradition, and belief system. Must reading for the serious student of contemporary events." -- Edgar Mitchell

"Certainly one of the most interesting, thought-provoking books so far written on UFOs." -- Colin Wilson

Dr. Jacques Vallee began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. While on the staff of the French Space Committee, he witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of unknown objects orbiting the earth, initiating a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon. Vallee arrived in the U.S. in 1962 and worked in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin before receiving a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University in 1967. There he became a close associate of J. Allen Hynek, then scientific consultant for the U.S. Air Force on Project Blue Book-the result was The Invisible College. Dr. Vallee is presently a venture capitalist living in San Francisco. His website is www.jacquesvallee.com.

Unique thesis, a little fluff
By bhangonoveloctresidom
Vallee's precious contribution to UFO research is his agnosticism and ability to see a third option: UFO's may not be physical "aliens", but they may also defy classification as pure psychological anomalies. So what are they? Vallee presents a fresh possibility.
The only reason I don't give The Invisible College 5 stars is the excess number of UFO cases documented. Granted, they may have been more necessary in 1975, when the book was published, but I doubt it. Most of us had been indoctrinated into the typical variations of UFOlogy by 1960 - but Vallee does retell the cases with clarity and intelligence.

From Magonia to "Control System", Vallee's evolving ideas move from the bizarre to the incredible
By The Guardian
Published in 1975, `The Invisible College: What a Group of Scientists has Discovered About UFO Influences on the Human Race' (the full title) was Jacques Vallee's fourth work on the puzzling UFO/contactee phenomena. Here he first put forward his idea that these phenomena were some kind of `control system' on human consciousness. Vallee is highly intelligent, his ideas are often interesting and he has a reputation for thinking out-of-the-box (he refers to himself as "a heretic among heretics"), but whether he ultimately offers any meaningful answers to this persistent set of phenomena is debatable. Many read Vallee's books and find his ideas hard to accept simply because they do not explain the evidence nor offer any credible, sustainable hypothesis.

The name `The Invisible College' was first used in the 1500s by early rationalist scientists who co-operated covertly to avoid the attentions of the Church, the then-controlling ideology, and (Vallee tells us) was resurrected by late 20th century scientists again confronted by a similar controlling ideology: that UFO and related phenomena do not exist and deserve no consideration. This latter-day Invisible College reportedly shared data and ideas about the UFO phenomenon in secret in order not to jeopardise their careers in the prevailing restrictive ideological climate. Where once people were burned at the stake, now they are merely ridiculed and ostracised for daring to be rational and open-minded.

The book's long title however is slightly misleading, as the content is not really about `what a group of scientists has discovered about UFO influences on the human race' but, rather, what Jacques Vallee personally thought about this subject in 1975. The text does not confine itself to UFO phenomena per se but embraces religious miracles, visions, ancient Phoenician symbolism, revelatory messages received through channelling and automatic writing, telekinesis and a range of other psychic phenomena which the author sees as interrelated.

Jacques can be tough going at times. In the introduction, he lays out his methodology:

"In this book I will not confine myself to the examination of the physical reality, but will step...to the experiential and even to the mythical. I will approach this enquiry within the framework of descriptive phenomenology..."

There is merit in frequently heard criticisms that TIC repeats cases detailed in the author's previous book, `Passport to Magonia.' However, TIC is not the same book as PTM but puts forward a different (and somewhat more `out there') hypothesis.

The basic argument of TIC, in a nutshell, is that UFOs and the associated phenomena which surround them cause changes in the life-attitudes of percipients. The phenomenon is without question a nuts-and-bolts reality with INTENDED psychological and physical characteristics. Physical effects on the environment serve to reinforce to the percipient that his encounter was real: such effects are more important than proving to third party investigators that something physical occurred. Vallee puts forward the thesis that these phenomena are possibly not due to extraterrestrial visitation but are collectively a kind of deliberate control system, like the heating thermostat in a house, designed to adjust perceptions in the human race and challenge existing societal thought paradigms. This control system, according to Vallee, operates by introducing elements of absurdity and dislocation from normal consensus reality as tools to move percipients into a new expanded consciousness. The ridiculous/absurd nature of many encounters keeps most scientists away from the evidence, as they are in thrall to current strait-jacket thinking and will not step over the boundary into unknown territory, and again this element is somehow intended by the agency controlling the phenomenon. Yeah, weird.

So Vallee goes beyond discussing if these phenomena are `real' to focus primarily on the effect encounters have on percipients. Of primary interest is the psychological impact of the phenomenon on, for example, French astronomers who Vallee witnessed being confronted by UFOs right in front of their eyes:

"Instead of asking whether these seemingly manoeuvrable and `impossible' objects could be a manifestation of some advanced technology (which may even have been terrestrial in origin) they thought only of suppressing...of denying every observation...and by destroying the data when it was demonstrated to them that no airplane could have behaved as the objects did...my interest in UFOs has gone through several phases during this period, but my curiosity about the behaviour of scientists who destroy, distort or simply ignore the very facts they are supposed to investigate has never been satisfied..."

Vallee takes it for granted that any intelligent reader who has done diligent investigation for himself will recognise that these phenomena are objectively real and physical. He is more interested in exploring how the encounter causes percipients to think and behave, and why. To Vallee, these effects are a planned and intentional product of the phenomenon; its `raison d'etre,' not unintended side-effects. To support his thesis he details various persistent paranormal events resistant to all prosaic explanations: the extraordinary abilities of UFO contactee Uri Geller whose telepathic and telekinetic abilities he tested; the series of `miracles' tied up with prophecy at Fatima in Portugal; the extraordinary UMMO phenomenon in Europe, generally regarded as an elaborate hoax but for which Vallee offers an alternative explanation. In TIC he begins to examine cases of those allegedly touched significantly by his hidden `control system' and who subsequently come to believe they have been given a special mission from on high: Joan of Arc and Mormon-founder Joseph Smith were essentially influenced by the same phenomenon as leaders of the new `space brother' UFO cults which form the focus his next book, `Messengers of Deception.' Credit to Vallee for getting out there and investigating encounters, claims and cult-like groups in person: he is no armchair theorist.

In evaluating Vallee's control system hypothesis, the obvious questions are: who or what is in charge and managing it? If something non-human, then what? Where is the real evidence for this idea, other than that some of Vallee's carefully selected cases can be made (with difficulty) to force-fit the theory? Most people care little about UFOs and have no interest in the subject, so how does this theory stand up? If some kind of inter-dimensional control system it seems pointless, futile, a failure. The reader should make up his own mind, and follow through the arguments expanded in Vallee's subsequent works `Messengers of Deception' (1979) and the `Dimensions' trilogy (1988-91).

Vallee has a literate if rather formal writing style. His books are not light reading but occasional gentle humour can be found if you search for it amongst the earnest flowing prose.

TIC is worth reading even if only to make you think in new ways about all this stuff, and appreciate how wild can be some ideas to try to explain it. For its clearly up-a-blind-alley-with-no-way-out hypothesis TIC rates no more than 3 stars, but given the benefit of the doubt due to the originality of the material it deserves 4. Good hardcover copies are hard to find, and not cheap: like `Anatomy of a Phenomenon' and `Passport to Magonia' there has been no latter-day reprint, and you'll need to find an original, so be prepared to pay real money for it.

An out of print masterpiece
By J. Burkes
Dr. Jacques Valle's " Invisisible College" is an amazing analysis of the UFO phenomenon. True to his scientific credentials he refuses to unquestionably embrace the ET hypothesis and instead focuses on the mechanisms of how the unseen intelligence behind the UFO interacts with human subjects and influences society despite attempts by both mainstream science and governmental authorities to deny the importance of what has been going on. Dr. Valle, John Keel and more recently Graham Hancock with the publication of his "Supernatural" have done an enormous service to mankind by revealing the link between the UFOs and all the other belief systems of this "haunted planet."

Not what was promised
By Diego Cafe
The book is a decent study guide to supplement the PMBOK, however, it didn't come with any flashcards as it says it should on the front of the book, AND I haven't been able to log into the website for online testing because the site will not send a verification email to complete my registration. I've also noticed one or two questions in the book, with answers that are clearly wrong. (I went back to the PMBOK and verified). Chapter 2, #11 is not C, it's A. I'm sure it's just a typo, but that could be pretty crucial to someone who doesn't know better. It also mentions a CD-rom that should've come with the book. Nope, didn't get that either. The whole point is to be able to take practice tests so that is a big disappointment.

Update: I contacted customer service yesterday and they were very helpful. They responded within an hour and informed me that the website is undergoing maintenance and provided me with a generic passcode that I am able to use to log in and take practice exams. The text does mention a CD-rom and flashcards, but that is all incorporated on the website now according to them. The flashcards can be printed from the website and the various chapters in the book remind you to do that. The misprints can't be helped at this point, but I'm giving this book a 3-star rating (up from 1-star). Customer service is excellent and all the information is available, but the fact still remains that the book isn't as polished as it should be. However, along with the PMBOK, I believe the information in this book will help you pass the test but there is no substitute for reading and due diligence.

Online features are horrible
By S Berry
Passed the PMP today, but not because of this book. I had high hopes for the book to help me be efficient in my self study for the PMP, but the online section was terrible! The state college in my area offers an in depth PM course which I took a few years ago, but due to a few unforeseen issues, I had to delay taking the test. I thought this book and online access was the a good idea since it was on the PMI website, but I was WRONG! The book by itself is of good value if you have a foundation in PM already, but the PMP test is about testing yourself on various scenarios. Once you read the PMBOK you will need a resource that will compliment your studies and the online test is confusing and frustrating to use. Repeated online testing is what helped me solidify my comfort with the exam questions and format. Unfortunately , this online access did not offer any statistics about my progress, some the questions were grammatically wrong, and some of the answers did even make sense. I did contact one of the authors and she responded that improvements were coming, but that is not going to help me pass the test. The online area is undeveloped and raw and not worth your time. My coworkers suggested RMC and I wish I wouldn't have wasted time or money on this product. I abandoned ship and switched to RMC project management online access for $300. The online access and the format is terrific! RMC gives you the ability to test by knowledge area or by process group, then your information is stored for review later. Your progress is collated and averaged and you can run various reports. There are even explanations to why your answer is right or wrong and references back the study guide to research (I skipped the RMC book). Disappointed that this didn't work, but I couldn't jeopardize my testing for a product that needs to mature.

Disappointed
By Colleen
I was rather disappointed in this book. First of all, while it is concise, that is because it suggests reading the PMBOK chapter guide four times in conjunction with using this book. To be fair, two of these times are supposed to be quick. I didn't follow the recommended method of study because it was only one of my tools for studying for my PMP. If it was your only tool, yes, perhaps their study method is necessary but certainly not if you have other study tools.

I probably am not going to remember everything that was disappointing about this book, but let me see if I can try...
- The sample final exam included is only 50 questions
- The sample questions in each chapter would often be repeats from the assessment exam at the beginning of the book
- The explanations to the various questions are only okay. Sometimes, they will only say something like "B is a good answer but C is better" without explaining what makes C better. Frequently, it will explain why A, B & D are wrong but never comment on C. For me, learning why the right answer is right is just as important as why the wrong answer is wrong.
- You have to jump through about 400 hoops to get to the "1300 practice questions." Seriously. First, you have to sign up to access the WAV content (FYI - these aren't audio files, it's an acronym for Web Added Value. They could have come up with something better.) Second, you have to download instructions on how to access the test bank. Third, you have to go to the test bank and sign up. Fourth, you have to register to the PMP course. Fifth, once you are FINALLY IN, you have to register EACH TIME YOU TAKE AN EXAM OR KNOWLEDGE AREA TEST, including providing your email address which seems to have no benefit because...
- Once you leave a practice exam or knowledge area test, you NEVER can see the results again. They don't email them to you or provide a handy section that lists each attempt you took with the results
- I took each of the knowledge area tests at least once (I'd estimate that I took three or four twice) and I did one practice exam. Let's assume that I saw 500 questions. The number of times I saw a question again was appalling. Even on the practice exam, questions were repeated. If they actually have 1300 questions, it would take you FOREVER to actually see them all. I'd estimate that on the practice exam, 10-20% of the questions were ones I had already seen. And that 10-20% is scaled back from the 25%-40% I actually feel were repeated but have reduced my estimate since I have a tendency to overestimate.
- the formatting of the questions left a lot to be desired sometimes. You'd get a question that involved EVM and the information wouldn't be in a table so it would be so hard to read.

Overall, if you are looking for a book that is going to give you good prep with questions as well as reviewing material, this might not be for you. If you just want something to help you review the material, it might be a good option.

Hell's Gate: The Battle of the Cherkassy Pocket, January-February 1944, by Douglas E. Nash

Virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, the Battle of Cherkassy (also known as the Korsun Pocket) still stirs controversy in both the former Soviet Union and in Germany. It was at Cherkassy that the last German offensive strength in the Ukraine was drained away, creating the conditions for the victorious Soviet advance into Poland, Rumania, and the Balkans during the summer and autumn of 1944. Eclipsed by a war of such gigantic proportions that saw the deaths of over one million men or more as commonplace, the events which occurred along the banks of the Gniloy Tickich river should have faded into obscurity. However, to the 60,000 German soldiers who were encircled there at the end of January 1944, this was perhaps one of the most brutal, physically exhausting, and morally demanding battles they had ever experienced. Thirty-four percent of them would not escape. The culmination of years of research and survivor interviews, Hell's Gate is a riveting hour by hour and day by day account of this desperate struggle analyzed on a tactical level through maps and military transcripts, as well as on a personal level, through the words of the enlisted men and officers who risked the roaring waters of the Gniloy Tickich to avoid certain death at the hands of their Soviet foe.

Eastern Anomaly
By Kevin Black, MA, MBA
Nash has written, I believe to be, one of the greatest works on the East Front. Stories of courage, imagination, and leader innovation are traits that mark the history of the East Front and are clearly present in this book. What makes this book an anomaly as my heading states? It is the fact that Douglas Nash clearly projects how personal the war was - not only at a tactical level, but also at the operational.
The Battle of Cherkassy (Korson) Pocket signified the destruction of the last German offensive capability in the East.
More importantly, it symbolizes two great operational struggles: The Russian will to destroy their invaders by attempting to create another Stalingrad catastrophe and the German resolve to survive and escape annihilation.
The Book describes the battle in three major levels: strategic, operation, and tactical. Each level includes the planning, coordination, and execution of their respective missions. The decisive characteristic of this work is the smooth intregration of all three of the levels and their respective components. Coupled with the operational and strategic awareness, Nash presents a myriad of personal accounts and stories at the tactical level that are uncommon for a book that covers an event of such size and magnitude. As a result, one will easily "feel" the desperation on the opposing forces. The result of Nash's diligent work: one will become immersed in the story rather than bored or confused from the complexity of the battlefield.
Finally, I want to address to the physical attributes of the book. The old saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover" should NOT apply here. The size, material, mere construction, and the cover pic leave an incredible, positive impression which is absolutely fullfilled by its content.
I became fascinated with the Battle of the Cherkassy (Korson) Pocket after reading about it in Paul Carrel's SCORTCHED EARTH; however, Carrel left me yearning for more detail about the battle - Douglas Nash successfully filled the void.

Good historical analysis
By citizen
Hell's Gate is a very good, in depth analysis of one of the Eastern front's most important battles. The buyer should be aware however that this book, in my opinion, is meant for military historians, not for the casual reader. As indicated in previous reviews, the book would benefit from better maps and detailed illustrations supporting the troop movements and positions well described in the book. My other criticism is that the author approaches the subject very analytically, and while he has incorporated first person material he has missed an opportunity to make the subject matter much more exciting and a better read. All in all it is a very good, detailed account of military history and if you are a serious student of WWII & the Eastern Front you would benefit by purchasing this product.

Lucky the ones who escaped.

Lucky, the ones who escaped
By far one of the best written books about this epic battle on the Eastern Front [Cherkassy] during W.W.II. This book is a must read. You'll never forget the agony, despair, and also the will to survive by any means, of those soldiers involved in this brutal battle.
Just an amazing book for the money !!!!

The Beatles and their Revolutionary Bass Player, by Dennis Alstrand

How the hell did four guys, from a city on the Northwest Coast of England, come to rule the world? I can not imagine what life would have been like without them. Can you?

How would the current economic state or all of the sorrows of the world compare to going through life never hearing “She Loves You” or “A Day in the Life”? Instead, we were able to live vicariously through a story that would make a great novel (if someone ever chose to write it as such). It has everything you need: desire, early failures, bleak moments, heartbreak, love affairs, dragon women and helpless maidens, martyrs, incredible characters—some dark and some light— coming and going just when they were most needed, insecurity and loyalty, triumph against all odds, the world held in the sway of four men who changed it all, a breakup that was viewed with more despair than Charles and Diana and—finally—four figures, four separate Phoenixes, stumbling to their feet and learning for the first time how to stand up without their three mates at their side. The intention of this book is to capture some of that story with a focus on the evolution of the bass playing of Paul McCartney. The book’s genesis was a website devoted to his bass guitar work (still online at www.alstrand.com) but it became clear that any discussion of one aspect of the Beatles leaves the rest of the story wanting. For example, to talk only about McCartney’s most famous bass line—the one in “Come Together”—ignores the innovative drumming of Ringo Starr, the swampiness of Paul’s electric piano, the quality of John Lennon’s voice, and the mere fact that he is saying “shoot me” at the start of each instrumental riff. To talk about one thing, you have to talk about it all.

Writing this book, I soon realized, was like riding on an emotional roller coaster. Pull out an old Beatles’ chestnut and listen closely to it with the intention of explaining it to someone else and you’ll see what I mean. In my case, maybe something about the structure of the arrangement would strike me as brilliant and I’d grapple for words to describe it. Words that did not make me sound like a wide-eyed, throat-gurgling, gob-smacked fanatic. Which I am, but I do try to hide it in these pages.

The songs that I had the most fun with were “She Loves You,” “A Day in the Life,” “Hey Jude,” “Come Together” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” Each song presents itself as a well-orchestrated masterpiece, complete in every way. To me, the Beatles were such an incredible team—such a tight unit—that whatever an individual did had an impact on the larger unit. In the early days, the group would generally run their songs through what I call the Beatles Machine. A song would go in with chords and melody and come out a full-fledged Beatles song.

About the Author
Dennis Alstrand started playing a Kent bass his mother bought for him in 1969. It was an intense but easy experience to become adept at the instrument, especially with heroes such as Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce and Chris Squire as role models. He still plays to this day (along with guitar and piano) and lives with his wife Sandi in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii. As can be surmised by the frequent inclusions in this book, he loves to converse with fellow Beatles’ fans and can be contacted at dennis@alstrand.com

Beatles Explained for Everyone
By Eugene Belmont
Just got this book a few days ago and have been reading, reading, reading. Dennis explains in the first few pages what to expect as you read on, and it's all true. He promises not to overwhelm with music theory, and he doesn't (thank goodness, my musical training ended with "my dog has fleas"). And to those folks who just simply love the Beatles and don't know why, this book will help you to understand the "why." The Beatle anecdotes are wonderful and skillfully narrated. And, although the book provides great coverage of Paul McCartney and his evolution as a bass player, the other members of the Fab Four are given their due, as well. It's very obvious right from the first page that Dennis is deeply steeped in Beatle lore, and is a loyal and devoted fan; he doesn't mind giving a little back o' the hand to those that presented problems to the Beatles' progress to stardom on the world stage. All in all, "The Beatles and their Revolutionary Bass Player" is a great read. Great job, Dennis!

Amazing.
By Nancy Bienville
Amazing reading the behind the scenes goings-on, things I didn't know before. Amazing that each song is written about so intelligently yet understandably. Amazing at how when I read about a song, or songs, I want to hear it again, to hear what Dennis hears. Amazing is the way the book is laid out so it can be read cover to cover, or skipped through at different years. Amazing how laugh-out-loud remarks are placed in unexpected places.
Also amazing is how Dennis took the soundtrack of my life and has brought new, interesting information to it.
Just go buy the book. Really. You will love it.

Review
"This textbook will remain a staple in the educational setting for both student and teacher. If an O&P student needs one book on gait, this is that book. For practitioners, the textbook is a ready reference that can augment existing knowledge and inform clinical practice."

— Bryan Malas, MHPE, CO

"The greatest strength of the new edition lies in its logical, reorganized content presentation, which seamlessly interweaves the old and new into a single comprehensive text the practitioner will find valuable in both its breadth and currency. As with the first edition, this textbook will remain a staple in the educational setting for both student and teacher alike. If an O&P student needed one book on gait, this would be that book. For practitioners, the textbook is a ready reference that can augment existing knowledge and inform clinical practice."

— Bryan Malas, MHPE, CO, American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists

"...in summary, this second edition includes several excellent additions to a classic textbook which should be on the book shelf of ever postgraduate student studying human gait, and every physiotherapist with a specific interest in gait analysis."

– Marietta van der Linden, Physiotherapy

"This is a first-class publication on a very important subject not discussed as commonly as other issues in orthopedics. The authors are well-known experts and the book is the result of vast clinical and research experience. This is the best book available on gait analysis."

– Riad Barmada, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, Doody Enterprises, Inc.

"Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function is a comprehensive text for basic gait analysis, systematically covering the fundamental components of normal and pathological gait. The clinical focus of this text makes it a useful resource for clinicians and students of all levels."

— Dr. Vivienne Chuter,University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, Physical Therapy Reviews

"Their excellent and subtle changes have enhanced the book’s value, both as a primer and as an encyclopedic reference on gait. The authors allude to what the observer "sees." New methods of gait analysis have more accurately characterized various parts of the gait cycle. Chapter 9 is really a summary chapter of the first part of the book, which covers normal gait. Valuably, it sums up the parts and puts them together. This chapter integrates the total limb function at each phase of gait, elevating observation to a more sophisticated understanding. The use of clinical photographs continues and helps readers relate the illustrated point to a patient or series of patients being treated- an especially valuable feature. The chapters on kinetics, running, and stride are updated and valuable. The chapter on dynamic EMGs has been expanded to discuss the relation of muscle control to the various aspects of gait, both normal and abnormal—an essential concept. Reading the first part of Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function will add dimension to observing gait and will be ideal for providing readers having an advanced interest with a more complete and clear technical understanding. In either instance, reading this text and comprehending the data make this text clinically pragmatic and worthwhile."

– Alfred D. Grant, MD, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York, NY, JAMA

About the Author
Jacquelin Perry, MD’s interest in gait began in college (UCLA). A major in physical education (1935-1940) introduced her to anatomy and provided a strong background in kinesiology with application to sports. Part of this experience was her attendance at the Physical Therapy Clinic of the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital where she began her exposure to disability. Subsequently, she became a physical therapist (Walter Reed Army Hospital, 1941), which expanded her knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, and disability.  Her physical therapy experience in Army hospitals during World War II provided a broad clinical experience (1941-1945). In addition to working with a regular flow of trauma patients, she spent 2 years at a center that had Army programs for poliomyelitis and rheumatoid arthritis. All 3 clinical areas involved a great deal of informal observational gait analysis as one sought to improve the patient’s ability to walk. During most of this time, she was also an instructor at two of the Army schools of physical therapy (Hot Springs, AR and Denver, CO). There she taught anatomy, kinesiology, and therapeutic exercise as well as the modalities. Both normal and disabled gait were strong elements of this program.  After the war ended, she used her GI bill to go to medical school (UC San Francisco, 1946-1950) for the specific purpose of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Perry’s residency in orthopaedic surgery (UCSF, 1951-1955) occurred during the period when poliomyelitis and reconstructive surgery were strong clinical programs. Observational gait analysis and experience in correcting disabled gait became daily practice.

Her next move was to join the staff of the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. In 1955, poliomyelitis was the entire focus of the rehabilitation program. Disability of lower limbs, spine, and arms were all major concerns while bracing and reconstructive surgery received equal emphasis. Working with this program further expanded her knowledge of muscle function and gait disability. In addition, her experience in observing polio survivors exposed her to a number of different gait patterns as the type of paralysis resulting from this disease varies from patient to patient.  Following introduction of the Salk vaccine, polio was conquered so Dr. Perry and her colleagues redirected their attention to other types of chronic impairments. This change was the beginning of their intensive rehabilitation program for spinal cord injury, hemiplegia, arthritis, and children’s disorders (primarily muscular dystrophy, myelodysplasia and cerebral palsy). Later, amputee and problem back services were added. At first, the program was for general rehabilitation. Then as the patient groups became large, they formed separate clinical categories with a ward for each (1961). While continuing the polio spine surgery program, Dr. Perry also developed a stroke unit.

Responsibility for persons disabled by a stroke forced her to expand her analysis process, as the functional pathology of individuals with hemiplegia is much more complex than that of polio. Because the standard clinical examination findings correlated poorly with the gait dysfunctions, a system of observational gait analysis was initiated. Developed in conjunction with a group of knowledgeable and dedicated physical therapists, the Rancho Los Amigos Observational Gait Analysis System became highly organized. For the first time, there was a means of cataloging the multiple dysfunctions that occur with the various types of pathology. For the past 25 plus years, they have taught this program nationwide. The organizational background of this book is based on this program.

A second development was the gait laboratory (1968). Its initial purpose was to document the improvement from reconstructive surgery in patients who could not be returned to normal function based on traditional rehabilitation therapy. This system was designed to help ascertain whether surgery actually was the better alternative for these patients. Out of this beginning was developed a functional diagnostic system to be used for planning the reconstructive surgery of patients with spasticity. The emphasis of the program was, and still is, kinesiological electromyography because the primary disability of patients with spasticity is inappropriate muscle action (errors in timing and intensity). Footswitches were developed to define the patient’s stride characteristics, and an electrogoniometer to record joint motion during gait also was developed. Clinical service and research have had equal emphasis from the beginning. Another novel emphasis has been on energy cost analysis of walking. An outdoor court was designed where habitual gait could be studied (Dr. Robert Waters spearheaded this). Today, the Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center is fully equipped with automated motion analysis (CODA™), force plates and walking aids instrumented with force transducers. All types of disability have been studied over the years and continue to be seen as the clinical need increases (cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, spinal cord injury, post polio, arthritis, joint replacement, amputees, myelodysplasia, and muscular dystrophy).

During her career, Dr. Perry has received numerous awards for her pioneering work in many areas of gait and orthopaedics. She received the Kappa Delta Award (Orthopedic Research Society, 1976) for landmark work with dynamic electromyography to define muscle function in cerebral palsy and the Isabelle and Leonard H. Goldson Award in Technology (United Cerebral Palsy Research and Education Foundation, 1981). She was a Shands Lecturer (American Orthopaedic Association, 1988) and received the Shands Award (Orthopaedic Research Society, 1999). Dr. Perry received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society (2000) and The Scoliosis Research Society (2008). In December of 2008, the University of Southern California dedicated the Jacquelin Perry Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory in her honor. Dr. Perry continues her lifelong dedication to the research and clinical application of gait. This publication encompasses the extensive work of Dr. Perry and her successful years as a therapist and a surgeon renowned for her expertise in human gait.

Judith M. Burnfield, PhD, PT is a most welcome co-author. She has excellent analytical skills and has an outstanding command of words. In addition, her scientific preparation and professional experience give her a unique perspective of impaired gait.

Dr. Burnfield’s interest in gait began during a clinical internship in 1986 on the Arthritis Service at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (Rancho). The analytic process encouraged during weekly gait sessions (many led by Dr. Perry) tapped into her investigative nature. Following graduation from the Physical Therapy Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1986), Dr. Burnfield accepted a position at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. Her initial work on the Ortho-Diabetes Service further sparked her passion for understanding gait. Differentiating the influence of human impairments from prosthetic alignment factors was essential for improving patient’s walking ability and helped her develop a greater appreciation for the role alignment, forces, and moments have on walking performance. During this period, Dr. Burnfield started teaching a course on prosthetics and orthotics in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Cerritos College (Norwalk, CA). Gait was a central component of the course.

Subsequent work on the Stroke Service, Gerontology Service, and in the Polio Clinic at Rancho expanded her knowledge related to the profound impact of weakness on movement disorders. It also highlighted the body’s exquisite versatility to compensate when sensation and control mechanisms remained intact (eg, with polio). Dr. Burnfield developed a strong appreciation for the role of lower extremity orthoses in promoting independence, particularly when the device’s capabilities were systematically matched to each patient’s unique impairments. During this period, Dr. Burnfield engaged in formal training to become a Rancho Gait Instructor. She then led gait sessions at Rancho and started teaching workshops around the country for therapists and physicians.

In 1996, Dr. Burnfield left her position as Director of Physical Therapy at Rancho to commence graduate studies in Biokinesiology at the University of Southern California (USC). Her doctoral research, under the advisement of Dr. Christopher Powers, focused on human and environmental factors contributing to slips and falls during walking. She co-developed and taught the introductory and then advanced observational gait analysis courses for students enrolled in the clinical doctorate of physical therapy program at USC. At the time of her enrollment in USC’s Biokinesiology program, she also pursued a position as a research physical therapist working in the Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho due to her desire to enhance her clinical research skills related to normal and pathologic gait. Her work in the latter environment focused on clinical and research studies quantifying gait abnormalities through the analysis of kinematic (motion), kinetic (moment) and electromyographic (muscle activity) data. The unique research and teaching experiences in the two environments complimented each other well and provided a framework for her role instructing Biomechanics and subsequently Kinesiology in the Physical Therapy Program at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.

Following completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Burnfield engaged in a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Jacquelin Perry. This mentorship had a profound influence on Dr. Burnfield’s professional development for which she is most grateful. This focused period of inquiry provided a strong foundation for their subsequent collaboration on the second edition of this book.

In October 2004, Dr. Burnfield joined Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. She serves as Director of the Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering, Director of the Movement and Neurosciences Center and the Clifton Chair in Physical Therapy and Movement Sciences. Dr. Burnfield has developed a dynamic research laboratory that capitalizes on the close proximity of patients and clinicians, a strong network of research collaborators internally as well as from universities and industry, and a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students willing and eager to learn and contribute. Research efforts focus on developing and studying new treatments and technologies to help individuals with physical disabilities walk, exercise, and live more independently. The fully instrumented Chapin Gait and Motion Laboratory within the Movement and Neurosciences Center includes state-of-the art technology and software for conducting biomechanical and physiological analyses of movement function including a twelve-camera infrared motion analysis system, 16-channel and 10-channel portable electromyography technology, four force platforms, a footswitch system and plantar pressure mapping technology, and a 30-meter walkway with an overhead safety support track and full-body harness system.

Dr. Burnfield holds adjunct faculty appointments at Creighton University, University of Nebraska– Lincoln, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the University of Southern California. In addition to a vigorous research agenda, Dr. Burnfield continues to teach gait in the academic setting and presents both nationally and internationally on gait and rehabilitation related topics.

Showing the fascinating complexity of Gait Analysis
By Ulrich Vissering
A previous writers tries to tell us, that gait analysis with our own eyes and understanding is outdated in a high tech world. I disagree. As it is true for many steps in the process of finding the reasons of disorder and disfunction and working on solutions, as medical doctor or as physiotherapist, it is allways the core of real quality if one understands by himself and his education in the field, what some high tech apparatus tries to tell him, sometimes telling it wrong. So giving up all your knowledge and expertise into the hands of a computer, or even showing that you have no interest to get this knowledge in the first place, is a sure way to failure in the medical field. And by the way, gait analysis isnt some dry, boring stuff, in fact, it is fascinating to realize how very important it is to be able to identify the different stages of this very short moment, to find the fitting solution for your therapy. I am just a beginner after completing a first course in gait analysis lead by a german pupil of Jacquelin Perry, and as a doctor in a rehab clinic I can tell you, its very up to date. And talking about the high tech world, who is able to buy a technical system, the hard- and software for gait analysis, for example as a simple practitioner? Better take your time to get some education by experienced gait instructors, read this book and all what you need is in your head and hands, plus eventually a small camera to make a short clip for analysis and presentation on a Monitor.

Great book! Highly recommended
By Joseph Nesser
Love this book! It reminds me of the Neumanns kinesiology - clear, concise and to the point. The book does not overwhelm you with too many words on each page, and the illustrations are very helpful.

An excellent easy to read and understand guide to gait
By John M. Lahr
An excellent easy to read and understand guide to gait. Uses very simplistic line drawings that easily detail specific parts of the cycle as well as how the parts all work together. A def for anyone that needs to understand gait and gait analysis.
