Tom Brophy spent 18 years with the New Jersey Department of Labor in the unemployment division. Tom's mission in life is to help as many people as he can re-establish their professional and personal lives. Through his own experience of being suddenly out-of-work and through interviews with thousands of unemployed people, Tom has a unique understanding of the emotional issues of unemployment, and of the strategies required to create a healthy outlook and a more efficient job search. Tom explains: "In 18 years, I spoke one-on-one with thousands of unemployed people. In most cases, we met for an eligibility interview where I verified their claims and made sure they were doing everything necessary to remain eligible for their benefits. Like most rookies, I followed the procedure to the letter. I had my interview form and simply went down the list looking for job prospects, phone calls, contacts made, and other customary procedures. "As time passed, I discovered I had a lot in common with the 'first timers.' I had owned my own business for more than 20 years. When it closed, I was devastated - and I had no idea how to get through each day, much less find a job. With no energy or self esteem, I felt unwanted and scared. How ironic it was to land a job through networking with friends in which I spent each day hearing the same pain I'd felt myself only months before. "As I grew more comfortable as an interviewer, I'd ask, 'How are you feeling?' or 'How do you spend your time?' Candidates who sensed that I was genuinely interested in them often broke down and cried. They were hurting and disoriented. They were somewhere they'd never been before, yet they were expected to fall into place and accept their plight. "Because I truly cared, I developed a program called Transition Layoff Counseling, and I would suggest that certain candidates attend my weekly seminars. Each week, I spent 90 minutes providing feedback and instructions based on the one-on-one interviews. Afterward, I tracked their progress. To my amazement, 92% were back to work in 5 months. "I went on to become the manager of the local office over the next 15 years, but I never forgot the gut-wrenching feeling of becoming unemployed. Should be entitled "Big Victories".

At last a someone has written a "readable" length book,full of common sense that we can all understand. None of us has been left untouched over the last few years by the superbug - UNEMPLOYMENT. We all know someone or have felt personally the misery and stigma attached to it. Where to turn and what to do are all graphically described by Tom Brophy. Why didnt someone else think to write this over the years? It is hardly a new problem but Tom has picked the bones out of it and outlined this refreshing approach.

I live in the North West of England and I have already passed Toms book on to 2 friends who agreed with every word.

Tom, keep up the good work and we eagerly await future publications.

Common Sense You Won't Find From Career Coaching Websites

Anyone that is looking for work - new college graduates, unemployed people - should read Tom Brophy's book. Giving concrete advice for approaching the job search, Brophy gets right down to his points. He gives clear examples of how to network and explains why sending out resumes day-after-day is a waste of time. While the book doesn't follow tradition writing conventions (e.g. there is often text underlined or boldfaced where it shouldn't be) and sometimes the writing lacks organization, when it comes down to it, the book is still worth the read. As an unemployed person who's been scouring blogs and career-related websites, I value Brohpy's insights and see that even the career coaches aren't telling people what Brophy is: resumes are a waste of time. If there is one lesson I will take away from Little Victories, it is to stop sending out resumes and to start aggressively networking via LinkedIn and other social media.

About the Author
Peter Adams began his art career in the 1950's at the age of 12 in England gaining a graduate degree from the Farnham School of Art followed by a post-graduate degree in painting from the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1962.

In his home country of England, Peter has had a varied career in the arts where he worked at portraiture, cartooning, advertising, TV, teaching and as a Bonsai nurseryman for 25 years. He now lectures worldwide and is a best selling author on the subject of Bonsai as an art medium.

Currently Peter is painting in acrylics, oils and pastels. His work is hanging in private collections throughout Great Britain and the United States. He has most recently been commissioned for portraiture, mural works and theatre set designs in Wisconsin and Washington.

The perfect product for bonsai interested maple lovers

Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.

Great detailed instructions on growing, training and styling bonsai maple trees. Excellent pictures and graphics. He covers several different techniques, some I had never seen discussed anywhere else. Good discussion of the general cultural conditions specific to maples. Suitable for any experience level.

After all these years

I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

Worth the $ and reading time...

Great story, would be 5 stars if it was longer, it concludes and leaves you wishing it had been more fleshed out. There were places story could have been lengthened going more in depth in certain areas. And the end was predictable, when it could have took some turns to keep you guessing to drag you into it better with the end feeling like more of a payoff.
The extra stories make up for the main story abruptness a little.

Compendium/Anthology, but very good

I expected the book to be a single story about the detective and his uncovering of the Leviathan's secret, but it turned out that this was only roughly half (maybe two thirds). The rest was a short essay about the work, and a handful of much shorter stories set on the Leviathan, predating the events of the main story.

These were quite enjoyable stories, though it was a little disconcerting, especially since the order, chronologically, was a little backwards.

Nevertheless, I'd highly recommend this; the art and script are very engaging, and the characters are interestingly three-dimensional. I'd love to see a follow-up about what happens after the end of the main plot, or more (longer) stories set on the Leviathan itself.

First Rate, Outstanding Graphic Horror

Reason for Reading: I love the lost ship, The Flying Dutchman, type of ghost story. Obviously there is a "Titanic" feel to it and I liked the appeal of a cross between crime and horror. Pretty much just had to read it after seeing the book!

One of my favourite graphic novels of the year and quite apropos that I read it shortly after reading an anthology of early 19th century ghost stories. This just fit my mood at the time so well. First of all the book contains the main story "Leviathan" which ran in over 10 issues of "2000AD" plus also includes 3 later published graphic short stories which take place sometime during the original main story. An absolutely fantastic, creepy, haunting, paranormal tale of a ship lost in Limbo for twenty years and the discovering of what has been keeping it there. The investigation by a former Scotland Yard detective of a series of atrocious First Class murders brings to a head the evil that is hiding (well-not really hiding anymore, eh?) deep inside the ship. This story is first-rate. The illustration, done in black & white is outstanding. This type of horror, for me, needs the finesse b/w adds to the grotesquerie when our minds are allowed to imagine the colour of the blood and gore rather than being blasted with it in full-colour. The demon's first appearance in the book is an amazing feat of awesomeness. One is stunned. I am so glad I've found this team of writer/author; they have done other work together which I want to explore. The three short stories are also fine examples of horror stories and take us back to the days when the ship is lost and introduce a few tales of events that happened, now that we know what was really going on there. I loved this and will probably read it again in the future. A Keeper for me!

This includes Lewis Coser's introduction and also a new introduction by Steven Lukes, together with a timeline of Durkheim's life and works and a guide to further reading. The translation by W. D. Halls (which supersedes the earlier seriously defective translation by George Simpson) has in turn been extensively revised and improved for clarity and accuracy.

A good balance of physics and application

We use this book as a first year graduate level quantum class in the materials department. It has a nice balance of theory and application, but you still feel like you have a solid mathematical understanding of the concepts. The language is clear and not bulky, and Kroemer really tries to give you an intuition of the physics in addition to the math. The exercises are often rewarding to do since they are not too math-y but they get the concept across well and you feel like you've discovered something. The downside is sometimes this intuition is not entirely clear and you get lost in what Kroemer thinks is intuitive (he is a Nobel winner, so I'd imagine there are quite a few things more intuitive to him than to most people). Also, there are quite a few errors in the text, so be sure you have the errata handy with you (some of the errata are actually quite significant, like negative signs or rewrites of entire sections).

Overall, this book ties in the math and concepts nicely and connects the theory and application. It's very rewarding to learn from this book. The classic text from Griffiths complements this book well. I'd also recommend hardback; the paperback binding tends to fall apart. There are many paperback texts floating around the office where chunks of the book just come apart....

Very Good QM text

It is one of the finest books you will see on QM and if you are from the electrical engineering stream with semiconductor physics as your major,no text perhaps shall serve you better.The striking aspect of the book is the physical insight it gives into highly abstract theories of QM and the illustration of that theory with a relevant example from the engineering/physical world. Mathematical results we take for granted just as another interplay of the numbers are attributed to some very definite law of nature,for eg the unobservability of absolute frequencies in the probability density function of linearly superposed states is a case in point.Rather than leaving the mathematical expression as a difference of two frequencies he goes onto explain it and also draws an analogy between Electromagnetic waves and the point where the classical limit and the analogy breaks down.This is just one example out of the many scattered throughout the text.Any one with a working knowledge of QM and some introduction to semiconductor physics will immensely benefit from it, though physicists alike, I think can draw much information from the material presented.I hope this book has greater circulation.No wonder the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his seminal work on semiconductor heterostructures.

Awesome book!

Prof Kroemer's book is just awesome. It doesnt go into too much mathematics, which is not usually the case for most QM books. It is written specifically for people who want to get a kind of intuitive feel for QM i.e. engineers. The book is very clear about its purpose. The chapters follow up each other in a very logical manner, and the text is precise and to the point. I had a great time learning from this book in my grad course.
